My pup was eating eukanuba lamb and rice, puppy food, then one day I made the mistake of letting him try some table scraps! What did I do that for? Now he refuses to eat the dog food and wants to eat table food! He will go all day if I let him, without eating the dogfood! help!

Thanks folks, all the suggestions are good, but I have tried the canned dog foods, the soft kinds, and the dog gravies, and all the dog foods that look like table food, here's the thing, if it even remotely smells like dog food, he won't eat it. He may tak e a few bites of the gravy and eat it, bu the actual dog food, he won't touch it. I guess I'll try the starve until he eats method!

Do NOT give him any more table food and he will get hungry enough to where he will eat his own food, also "human" food is not good for dogs and may cause a lot of issues such as stomach problems and other known things like that...

You have now created a monster puppy. He wants people food and nothing more. You now have to get control and put him back on the right menu that's suitable for him. Get your puppy a good puppy food like Eukanuba, Nutro, Royal Canin or any of the other good dog food and you might try adding some plain yogurt, a little cottage cheese or a canned dog food like Mighty Dog which comes in many tempting flavors. Little Caesars is another wet dog food that comes in many flavors. You could also boil some hamburger and crumble that up into the kibble to get him to start eating. You must stop giving him table food or he will not even think of trying something new. I have raised dogs for quite awhile and I am a dog trainer and I can tell you this, a dog will not readily starve himself if his own food is offered to him. He is being like a child, not eating his dinner, and waiting for dessert. This bad habit can really hurt your puppy so don't think you are being mean, you have to get him on his own food. When you were a child and you didn't eat your supper, you were probably sent away from the table with no supper and no dessert. You didn't starve and it did teach you to eat your meal. Your puppy is just that a puppy and he needs the food that is suitable for him to grow into a healthy dog. I know you love him but you have to do what's right for him. Tough love will get him on the right track but you have to be strong enough to do it. Good luck to you and your puppy.

Dogs won't starve themselves. Put a normal serving of his food out in the morning as usual, and if he doesn't eat it within 10 minutes, take it away. Offer it again at dinner time. If he does not eat it within 10 minutes, take it away. I promise you he will be eating the next day if you don't give in and give him more table scraps. If you knew you could get better food by ignoring what was initially given to you, wouldn't you keep doing it? You are the boss of the house, not the dog. Make sure you are consistent :)

I know what you are going through, and have asked help from dog trainers. First give him dog food it should only be left out for him for 10 minutes only, if he hasn't eaten it he gets it for tea. They will NOT strave them selves even if it takes two or three days. I am a bit of a soft touch so I would cook some meat for my dog and cut it very small and mix it in with the dog food that seemed to work as well. Good luck

First of all, never give him any more, or he'll never eat dog food. You could try crating him or putting him in a different room while you eat so he can't see you. Also, you could try some sort of dog barbeque sauce or soft dog food, or try another type of food. He won't connect it to his previous food. It might even seem like people food, but it'll be good for him! I hope this works for you and good luck.

I know it may seem cruel, but dont feed him anything else BUT dog food. Dont let him anywhere near table scraps or anything. Just leave the dog food in the bowl in the floor. If he gets hungry enough he will eventually eat it.

Start with a soft dog food from a can, then slowly over the next two week mix in the hard dog food. Also put him/her outside when everyone is eating.

Try food brands like Natural Balance, Innova, Solid Gold or California Natural. They have more meat and smell more like the table scraps he got used to. They have less fillers and harmful by-products than even Iams and Science Diet. I bet he will like one of them.... Good Luck!

Don't feed him anything but his dog food. If he gets hungry he will eat it. i've never seen a dog starve himself if there is at least dog food around.

Check out a premium dog food like INNOVA Evo (best thing next to a raw food diet -- in a small kibble form). My dog loves it!
