Norton, Trend-Micro, and McAfee are all crap, although Norton catches about 10 times what McAfee will catch. I have had people using the latest version of McAfee with updated definitions bring me their computer. Norton found several different viruses in many files. To take it one step further, Avast! and AVG (both 100% free for personal use) have also found things neither Norton nor McAfee found. I use Avast! (www.avast.com) now, but even when I used Norton I never had a virus.
The key here is you need to be careful and be aware of what actions on your part make you vulnerable to viruses. Always keep your antivirus up to date, get an anti-spam software if your version of antivirus doesn't offer spam protection, never open emails (especially those with attachments) from people you don't know, and do not attach USB devices or insert discs from unknown or untrusted sources into your computer.

More than likely Norton has been crippled by the virus or the virus is occupying the cpu to prevent norton from working. So long as Norton is updated, restart the PC and boot in to Safe Mode by pressing F-8, log in as Administrator and do your virus scan there to save time and be more thorough. I detest Norton and recommend Command AntiVirus -> http://www.authentium.com

EH windows xp comes with a formatter just dont do a quick format just do the regular NTSF format... i dunno why u want another program to wipe data even though windows can format throughly...and just to say why do you use norton use mcafee its more reailable because it scans the places where a virus will infect not the whole damn computer like norton...and plus mcafee loads 10x faster than norton

Next time try trendmicro on-line scan for immediate cleaning. It's free and it works great.
The best way to scan - scanning in a safe mode.
To start your PC in a safe mode, press F8 key while the PC booting, then choose "safe mode with networking".
Now open your Internet Explorer, go to www.trendmicro.com, choose "free virus scan" and follow instructions.
Good luck!
