The higher the megahertz the better reception.

It depends on several factors.

The 2.4GHz spectrum is crowded with a lot of other transmitters (Wireless networking -- WiFi -- equipment, other cordless devices, emissions from your microwave) so it would seem that 5.8MHz would be better since it is less crowded and, in general, that's true. However, the higher the frequency, the more easily it is blocked, and 5.8GHz is considerably higher frequency than 2.4.

So the answer is this: if clarity/sound quality is most important, and range (the distance between the handset and the phone) is not as critical, then 5.8GHz is the best solution. If range is most important, and sound quality is less so, then 2.4GHz or even 900MHz would be a better option.

Hope this helps.

The 2.4 Mhrtz will work just fine, the higher ratings, means he can be further away from the base, and still get clear calls.
So if he is in a small house or apartment, the higher rating isnt' really needed.
I bought a small 2.4 MH with answering machine, from Uniden, and it works great. You do need to study the directions carefully, as you have to program the area code into it. But all the phones are like that these days.

Yes, it is, though at that point, why go so much bigger. How far away is he getting from the base? I mean, my dad took a 1 mhz cell phone 3 houses away before losing signal, so theoretically he should be able to get 6 hourse with the 2.4 and 12 houses with the 5.8.

A higher frequency phone will penetrate walls and other obstructions better and will use less current draw on your cordless battery. Go with 5.8

Depends on many factors:

If the phone is hooked in to a line near a computer and/or with DSL internet, you want to go 5.8MHz

If not, and you are in a low traffic area, the 2.4 provides superior range as it takes less power to extend the signal of lower frequencies.
