They are not necessary. Most people eat too much protein anyway; a portion should be no bigger than your palm. It is also doubtful that you used enough calories during your workout to justify one. People who swig them are usually wasting their time and money and end up gaining useless bulk weight.

If you have had a very long and arduous workout (longer than 1 hour run or similar) a drink with carbs can be good but you would be better off with water and a healthy snack. Or isotonic drinks can be good if the weather is very hot and you are working very hard and getting dehydrated/cramps easily. Otherwise save your money!

Yes! Protein shakes are very healthy before and after working out. When working out, you strain your muscles. In order for your muscles to repair and become stronger, they need nutrients. One of the most important nutrients the muscles need is protein. The best thing to do when working out is to eat 6 meals a day. These meals don't have to be big, they should be well balanced and lean. Basicly healthly calories. When lifting weights, you should try to digest one gram of protein for every pound of body weight. for example, if you weight 180 pounds, you should digest 180 grams of protein a day. Muscles are built outside of the gym so eating healthy and eating a lot of healthy food is very important. Go Protein!!!

Yes. It is a cheap way to get your recommended protein without having to eat 20 chicken breasts a day.

yes. my cross country coach always made us eat carbs and proteins after practice because after you work out you have one hour to eat or drink proteins or carbs that help restore the bodies nutirents (i dont recall all the scientific names) and it helps your bodys condition adapt to the workout and improve your bodies fitness. thats what he said and hes a coach.... he called it "hour power" so i guess just make sure its within the hour of the workout so its effective.
