How can you not say Secretariat is the greatest horse ever. Not to take away from what the other horses did, but Secretariat was a freak of nature. After he died, his autopsy showed that is heart was more than double the size of a normal horse heart. His genetic freakishness gave him an absoulte advantage.

Secretariat easily wins when he was at his peak. There were people who saw ManOWar and were old when Secretariat came along but they said Secretariat was better. And if we look honestly we must also look at the ones close at their best...Monarchos was a tick off Secretariat's record, the only one to come close to toppling it. Sham would have been THE HORSE in any other year than 1973. From a *time* standpoint they deserve to be in such races but never are. There's also a huge difference in tracks and all from Man O War to today. We don't know what Pharlap might have done on US tracks at that distance.
Sir Barton in 1919 ran on a "heavy" track - his time was much slower than secretariat's but what might Sir Barton done on today's fast track. 1948 it was "sloppy" for Citation - and how would Affirmed and Alydar's battle add to the mix.
It's a topic that generates a lot of discussion and different views - but there's so many variables it's impossible to say

secretariat was the greatest racehorse to ever live. he's still to this day the only horse to ever run the kentucky derby in under 2 minutes, and i believe he still has the fastest preakness and belmont times as well. i didn't follow your link but if the USA TODAY predicted man of war could have beaten the great secretariat they are full of s**t!!!

yeah, im pretty sure that Secretariat would easily win any matchup. He had the X factor that all racehorse breeders dream about. His heart weighed upwards of 22 lbs. That horse was amazing.

Alysheeba without a doubt. But for Chris McCarron's gawdawful ride in the Belmont, he would have swept the Triple Crown plus won the BC Classic. What horse can say that? That's right--none.

on any test, it's been statistically proven the first though's right more often. my first thought...Secretariat (though not by 36 lengths-a distance the horse once dusted a quality field by!!).
