Feed him a diet of good-quality seed mixture, with some veggies, too. My mom's budgie, Billy, used to love lettuce, broccoli, carrots, strawberries (he picked the seeds off them!), bananas--pretty much anything we were eating. Make sure he has clean water at all times--use bottled water, if possible, as tap water has chlorine and other chemicals in it. Some animals aren't affected, but I have a friend whose cats get sick if they drink tap water.
Keep his cage out of cold, drafty areas, someplace where he can have some quiet and privacy if he wants it, but also not too far from people. Budgies are social and need company to be happy.
If you let him fly loose, don't be surprised if he sits in an open window. Billy used to do this even in winter, when we'd open the window a crack to let in some fresh air, and he'd sit right in the open spot with the cold air blowing on him! He never got sick, though. Also, it's not really a good idea to let a bird fly around if there are children or other pets around, or things he could get hurt on, or if there's a chance he could fly out a door or window. Most people clip their birds' wings so they can't fly, as it's easier to catch them before they can make a break for freedom!
Learn to clip your bird's toenails and beak. It isn't hard once you get the hang of it, and will probably be necessary if they don't wear down fast enough.
Find a veterinarian in your area who deals with small animals, just in case your budgie does get sick. It's better to do this while he's well than to wait till an emergency occurs. Good luck! I love budgies--they're just the cutest little birds. :o)

I use to own some but its been a while. There is a vitamin suppliment you add to its water and that helps keep it healthy. getting it toys or if you can another bird as a companion helps too. Keep the cage clean and trim its wings when needed, so it cant fly away(learn to do it right) . Go to a pet store or a library and read books about them.

Keep him out of drafts, out of the kitchen, (it gets hot and some chemical fumes can hurt them), and feed them really good food. Get a book on them from the library or a bookstore. Books have to be fact checked, (so you know the information is accurate) but anyone can write anything on the internet.

The answer above me is an excellent way of healthy caring for your bird. Just one addition though. Calcium is critical for birds (especially of the parrot family), particularly, if you are going to give him bottled or filtered water. Your vet will guide you to where you can a liquid supplement to put in his water or on his vegs.
