Are you going to study at Kaist?
I have a friend who studies there... but I myself have only been as far as the train station.
That university is well known for lots of super intelligent students.

From what I gather Daejeon is fairly newly developed city, I know that they have great shopping, another friend of mine is from there and she always has great glasses, and clothes.
Its not as mountainous as some of the other cities.

Its not far from Daegu (the third biggest city in Sth Korea), South Korean transport systems are really good, so you needent worry. If you get bored, the buses and trains run pretty much all day and night (save the subways and local buses).

I hope you really enjoy your time in Korea! Try to learn to read the language before you come... you may not find you need it for studying, but its very helpful when out and about in the rest of Korea.
Sogang university has a great online learning programme and its FREE!
Good luck!
