We are in the process of adopting. You should start by getting your homestudy done. If you live where there are registered agencies then you can contact them and they will help you with the homestudy part. ( A homestudy is where you go through a series of interviews with a social worker as well as one or two home visits). Once you have registred with an agency they will give you a list of things you need to do. Such as a criminal check, fingerprinted, medical check, references.
You also need to decide where you want to adopt from. Domestic or International. The fees vary but you should start budgeting for about a 20 - 30 thousand dollar adoption. Plus travel. Depending on where and what you are looking for.
It takes awhile to get everything in order and then once you do you have to still wait.
We are doing private adoption because we are looking for an infant. So we have to wait for a birthmother to choose us. It is a long wait, even if it only takes a few months it feels like forever.
If you google adoption you will get a ton of sites. I am assuming you are in Canada so you could look up CanadaAdopts. That site will give you an overview of how things work. If you go to CAFAC.com it is a good place to look at different country fees and compare prices. Keep in mind that a country fees is just the fee to take the child from that country it does not include agency fees or lawyer fees.
Hope this helps

Being in my 40's, lots of friends have now gone the adoption route.
Some adopted overseas, especially China but also Eastern Europe and Russia. 6 months to a year, $10-15,000. Or more.
One adopted out of the deep south, being willing to raise a black child in a white family. That was quicker and cheaper.
One adopted from their local county child protective services. No travel involved, minimal expense, a lot of background checks etc. Being willing to take two brothers together got them towards the top of the list. When the birth mother had another kid, they had a option to adopt the youngest.
A national magazine (Time? Newsweek?) reviewed adoption options for costs, screening, etc. Different countries of orgins have different issues. More fetal alcohol syndrome in Russia, Romanian orphanages are poorly staffed (one staff per dozens of screaming babies so they tended to be sensory deprived), China is mostly unwanted girls due to their one-child policy or "imperfect" boys with mild to moderate birth defects (odd hand, missing an ear, etc), Africa has a lot more orphans whose parents died of AIDS and who may (or may not) be HIV-positive. Etc.
Ask a libarian to check the Reader's Guide for recent magazine articles. That one was about 2 or 3 years ago.
Everyone (not really) wants the perfect white child next week at no cost. In reality, those factors of race, "perfection", time and money are all opposed to each other. Whoever you adopt you will love and you won't be able to imagine being without them. But be realistic about your ability to handle any child and especially a special-needs child. Those who have greater financial, family and social support can more reasonably handle the added demands.

My parents adopted my little brother. It was a lot of paper work and he had special needs so it was quicker than normal children. You do need a lawyer. My parents went throw Catholic Family services you may try something like Planned Parenthood.
It cost my parents about $5000. But again he had special needs, so it was a lot less than normal adoptions. Good Luck on your baby hunt!!

It depends where you want to adopt from. I know a couple who adopted from young pregnant women shelters. They arranged it ahead of time, took care of the girl's medical costs and helped her during the pregnancy. This is one way. Have you googled it?

regrettably we've a impressive form of individuals who've followed who ought to in no way were allowed to. contained in the interest of scuffling with tragedies, the domicile study procedure has grow to be rigorous. It prices money. on the global aspect, we've countries like Guatemala the position graft, fraud and corruption have stolen children from their moms. So we've more effective regulation. It prices money. I understand and percentage your frustration, even if i'm not completely particular adoption is how achievable ensure the topic matters those youthful ones face. dropping their kinfolk and way of existence is a severe value to pay to be secure. yet there are uncommon situations the position that's wonderful for a particular newborn, and it truly is the youngster who will pay the price for useless delays and fee. i'm not positive there is any incorrect thanks to guard children than for adoptive mom and father to pay a small fortune to undertake.
