Well throught the years the self-righteous have always tried to beat up on people that don't have their beliefs... And say well god said to do it... If there is a god I picture him being one of love not one who says "you are different" or "I hate the fags" you know in the bible it says you should keep slaves... I bet a certain group in very happy that their were good people who said no it's not ok to have slaves. Religion is evil... in the wrong peoples hand like Hitler, Bush Jr.

I don't think self righteousness is limited to people who call themselves Christians. Self righteousness is for anyone with a need to feel better than the next guy. In the Bible there is a group of self righteous guys called the 'Pharisees' that Jesus went toe to toe with all the time. In short they were a Jewish political party that thought they were better than everyone else. They were ultimately the guys that killed him.

Sadly, it sounds like most of the Christians you have met act more like those guys. The life and teachings of Jesus are in four books Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. In many Bibles, things he said are actually highlighted in red so you could read everything he really said and taught in a couple hours. You'd be amazed how different he is than the people you've run in to.

Why do you say we are self-righteous? All u liberals are self righteous! U hate Christians, so does everyone, we are so put down! Don't u know Jesus love U?????!!

OK, was that self-righteous enough? I don't know why so many Christians act so self-righteously, I want to believe that they just don't realize how obnoxious they sound, or how pushy they are intheir desire to be "unselfish and share the love of God".

There are some athiests and "satanists" and Jews and Muslims who act pretty silly too, though, to be fair. Christians are just better at it.

I don't know if I'd say a lot of Christians are self righteous but some are and it gives the rest of the Christian population a bad name. You have to expect a few bad examples in any organization that large.

Christians are not self-righteous. Christians are people who have found peace and happiness in Jesus Christ and want everyone to experience the same thing...we feel very strong about our beliefs and we want to share that. So if you really think about it Christians are very unselfish, they want to share God's love with everyone.....Christians are sinners just like everyone else, we are still human. Those who call themselves Christians and don't think that they sin, really need to reevaluate themselves. I think that those are the people who give Christians a bad name.

Why are so many non-Christians so self-righteous? Don't they realize how unappealing it is?

misquoting Shakespeare, "Methinks they do protest too much".

In other words, I believe there is a basic insecurity about their belief system which is upsetting them. They lash out, instead of becoming introspective, damning heretics to hellfire and then promising to pray for them. I believe this phenomenon would make a good term paper for a psychology class.
