Follow this tried and true axiom -- if it doesn't fit in a back pack, you can live without it.

That worked for me until I began to clutter up my life with material possessions and Igot fat and lazy.

Life was so much simpler when I was a traveling man, and I really did get by quite well with only what I could put in my pack and tie on its frame (like my mountain tent, sleeping bag and a couple of tools --hatchet and spade).

Plan a wardrobe of layers, with two pairs pants/jeans, two outer shirts, sweater/sweatshirt, coat/parka, hiking or walking boots/shoes which you wear and a pair of sneakers or sandals you can pack. Socks and undies. Basic toiletries kitbag. Umbrella. Hat.

You can buy more stuff as you need.

You can find work along the way, often for pay and a place to stay.

You can even start with a season on a cruise line, and earn money, get to travel, and make contacts along the way.

You can get work in resorts, particularly good in remote national parks where the employer has to furnish housing.

It really does depend on what you are doing. I travelled around the world for a year and brought 5,000 Euro with me. I was working for about 6 months of the time in various jobs and travelling for the other six months. I think that no matter how much money you bring out with you, you'll run out! The credit card did end up getting a bit of a battering!

I only know 1 person who tried it,he took £10,000 & a new credit card with £3,500 limit & only got 1/2 way...he had 2 work & save 4 6 months in Australia 2 b able 2 get home via USA.

Based on this I'd probably recommend about £30,000.

Good Luck if you do it...I really want to but could never save that much cash.

Well, it depends on how you're travelling.

I travelled overland from Singapore to Germany in 8.5 months on only USD 6000. I only flew back from Munich, and the rest of the way was travelled via the bus, taxis, motorbikes and trains (the Trans-Siberian amongst them).

As I only had USD 7000 on me, I could not return to Singapore via Central Asia (which was my original plan). Most of my money was spent in Sweden, Germany (1 month), Belgium and the Netherlands. The rest of the countries were relatively cheap.

I would definitely recommend it to everyone!!!

Just finished going around the world. However, I can't tell you how much it will cost you.

There are many factors that will affect the cost. How many countries, do you plan to see, how long will stay in one location, how do you plan to travel...

To give you a very rough number, figure $100.00 a day for the basics (Europe will be higher, Asia cheaper) plus travel tickets.

There is no way you can budget something like that! My friend travelled from uk to Australia and back to uk over 6 months and he ran out of money after 3 months. He slept rough for a bit and then ended up putting it all on credit card>>big bill!!!

You can always do chores for food/bed and board though...!

One World has alliance airfares to destinations around the world. It depends on what class you want to go, be it tourist, business or first. Some alliances go by miles traveled, while others go by how many continents you visit. When budgeting, budget toward the high end. With exchange rate fluxuations, it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to money.

It depends on where your going and how prepared you are to "rough it". I soent 5 months in Asia and spent about £2,500 (English Pounds), and I was budget consious a lot of the time. In Europe that money would last a lot less.

It depends if you are going to try and pick up work along the way, what sort of accommodation you intend using, what countries you intend to go to, what level of 'lifestyle' you are used to.

As regards luggage, take half as much as you think you'll need - you'll still have way too much.
