I have a cousin that goes to West Point and will be graduating next year. I am scared that he will be sent to Iraq or somewhere and might get killed. Anyone know the likelyhood of that happening? I respect the soldiers there (especially ones that have died for us) but I don't know if I can take my cousin going (especially since the whole thing started with him getting a great deal to play basketball at West Point).

i've been in the military 19 yrs, i was in 17yrs b4 i ever went to war.
remember by going to west point he is joining the army, and he will have to serve his time on active duty.
basketball is secondary.
it all depends on what job he choses to do, if he choses a combat mos and what unit he is attached to.
he will probally be sent over seas, but not necesserally to iraq.
it all depends on the job he chooses, just because he is in the army dosen't mean he will get killed. those are choices that he will have to make if he wants to put himself in harms way.
you will see when he comes out of west point he will be a different person, u will be proud of him not many get accepted to west point

He's three years into a college education he gets a paycheck for & that costs the govt $135,000 per cadet per year. I gurantee you he's not just there cause he wanted to play basketball. It does depend on what job he choses, and he would've already done that if he's going to be a senior, but I'm willing to bet he wants to go and do his part, and the chances are probably good they're going to let him. On the bright side, by the time he graduates, completes training, & is assigned to a unit training up to go, we should theoretically be about done in Iraq. He's a soldier though & probably will be for a good long while. Not to sound harsh, but you might want to get used to the idea. I have a lot of friends in combat, and it's not that big a deal. you have a little tense worry in the back of your mind, but there's nothing you can do so you just trust they'll do their jobs well & get home safe. Also, a cousin just graduated from Air Force on the way to UPT in a couple months.

Hard to say without knowing what his specialty is. However, you need to remember he joined the Army, not a basketball team. The fact that they recruited him to play basketball during his time at West Point has no bearing on what happens next. He promised to abide by the orders he is given.

uhh...if he's in the military he's probably gonna go. I just got out of the Marine Corps after 5 years, I did two tours in Iraq, chances are he will be fine. (I don't have a scratch on me and I was a helicopter machine gunner) More service members injure or kill themselves back in the states during peace time than while at war. Won't hear that on the news though...

He is in the military, you should expect the worst hope for the best, that is the way it Will always be! If he goes, he goes, support him and the country he is fighting for! If he doesn't go, i want to know which menopausal Lt. Col. is he sleeping with, and tell me, so my fiancee can come home, and stay here! Your cousin is also property of the US government, and he signed his free will over to them, weather it was to play stinking' basketball or not! So deal with it, he has to! Plus it's happening to him not you! so be thank full you know a brave enough man that would fight for you and every one else in this great country, despite our government officials!

If there is a war going on, soldiers will be fighting in it. The price for that "great deal" he got is to do the job he is being trained to do.

The West Point Grads are usually flung straight to the battlefield if there is one, because the Army wants them to get the experience.

Depends which branch he goes into of the military. People in the Navy have the highest probability of living during wartime!

The chances are pretty good, but with being in the navy, there is less of a chance of his deployment to actually be on the ground. He may be on a carrier in the Persian Gulf.
