Many Christians believe in the Bible alone, that it is the only authorithy for the Christian faith. Shouldn't the Bible say that? There is no verse in the entire Bible that supports it. How ironic! Sola Scriptura goes against the Bible!

Texas mom:
John 12:48 is talking about the words of Jesus not the Bible. He means his words orally, Jesus didn't use the word "Bible".
2 Timothy 3:16-17 is true. scripture is profitabele. It does not say scripture ALONE. I doesn't say ONLY scripture.
Rev. 22:18-19 is talking just about the book of Revelation. The book of life is the book that judges us all and has our name, it is not the Bible.

You cannot find evidence that the Bible is the ONLY authority from the Bible. If you believe in sola scriptura, then ALL Christian Truth should be found in the Bible, including sola scriptura.

Of course it's rediculous. The pastors of the different churches have to make some excuse as to why there are over 600,000 different christian denominations though. Those pastors of the churches wanted to be able to "guide" what their following believed in. Only by proclaming the bible is perfect, and themsevles, the pastors the most educated (supposedly), were the best ones who could interpret the scriptures to what they "really meant". This is why so many christian believes change all the time throught history. Also why those believes are the most popular of the day. If the pastors weren't the sole interpreter of the scriptures they wouldn't be payed so much.

Ironlicly you'll never find the word "bible" in the scriptures either. The word mean a collection of books.
Most christians will scite Rev 22:19 to you. They fail to realize that the "book" the scriptures is talking about is the book of revelation, not the bible. John (who wrote revelations) hadn't even written the Gospel of John yet when he wrote revelations. According to christian doctrine then the book of John would not be allowed. Of course christians also don't realize that the bible was not put together for several hundred years after the apostles died.
There is a like scripture in Deuteronomy 4:2 "ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the lord your God which I command you".

If christians interpreted this the same way as they did revelations all books, revelations, everything would end after Moses. Of course they don't interrept it that way, that would be rediculous.

Neither Sola Scriptura nor Prima Scriptura, as doctrine, are explicitly found in the Bible. In that sense, both doctrines can be considered to be unscriptural.

Both doctrines are implied, if one does an extensive study of both the the Tanach, and the New Testament. Thus both can be said to be scriptural.

The major issue/problem with "sola scriptura" is how does one know tht one is dealing with Scrip[ture qua God's word and not scripture qua man's word.

The major problem with "prima scriptura" is how much importance to give to the other sources? How can one know that the other sources are doctrinally correct?

And before somebody claims "Tradition", I'll just point out tht no matter how you slice it, that also is unscriptural.

Your argument is weak.

1. Although the scriptures do not explicitly say 'sola scriptura', that does not mean that Luther's premise is unscriptural. In fact it is much easier to build an argument from Scripture for it's authority, than for the authority of the 'traditions of men.'

2. Because the bible does not state it is explicit in favor of it, does not mean that it is against it. That's just bad reasoning.

Psalm 19, 119, all of Proverbs. Paul's claims of authority, Peter's support of Paul and Jesus's condemnation of the Rabbi's twisting of scripture, provide a sound basis for Luther's assertion.

You are obviously a Catholic which teaches that traditions of the church are greater than the scriptures. It is also obvious that you don't know the scriptures well enough to realize that the scriptures prohibit us from following any other teaching than the word of God.

Here sre some examples:
"But in vain they do worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men." (Mat 15:9)
"This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith; Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth." (Tit 1:13-14)
"Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you." (Deu 4:2)

The "commandments of men" refers to the dogmas that God did not command. The Catholic church has worked very hard to supress the scriptures that teach the truth because they point out the errors of the church. That is what the inquisition and "holy wars" were all about, murdering others in an attempt to suppress the truth.

God has told us not to add anything else to what he has commanded us to do, or to take anything out of the words that he commanded.

The only reason that you and your priests would make such a statement is becausse you know that the doctrines and practices of the catholic church are far from what the Bible teaches.

Just because the "latin" term Sola Scriptura doesn't appear in the Bible..that doesn't mean that we should allow other doctrine...the Bible warns repeatley about that..."the doctrines of men". We are also told to rely on "every word the proceeds from the mouth of God" and never on our "own understanding." So yeah...the Word of God exclusively. The scriptures refering to the Word of God or scripture are too numerous to list her..and it is all in the Bible. Why would there be any other authority and why would you want to trust it?

Psalm 118:8
8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD
than to trust in man.

15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:15-17
16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Job 28
1 "There is a mine for silver
and a place where gold is refined.

2 Iron is taken from the earth,
and copper is smelted from ore.

3 Man puts an end to the darkness;
he searches the farthest recesses
for ore in the blackest darkness.

4 Far from where people dwell he cuts a shaft,
in places forgotten by the foot of man;
far from men he dangles and sways.

5 The earth, from which food comes,
is transformed below as by fire;

6 sapphires [a] come from its rocks,
and its dust contains nuggets of gold.

7 No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
no falcon's eye has seen it.

8 Proud beasts do not set foot on it,
and no lion prowls there.

9 Man's hand assaults the flinty rock
and lays bare the roots of the mountains.

10 He tunnels through the rock;
his eyes see all its treasures.

11 He searches [b] the sources of the rivers
and brings hidden things to light.

12 "But where can wisdom be found?
Where does understanding dwell?

13 Man does not comprehend its worth;
it cannot be found in the land of the living.

14 The deep says, 'It is not in me';
the sea says, 'It is not with me.'

15 It cannot be bought with the finest gold,
nor can its price be weighed in silver.

16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir,
with precious onyx or sapphires.

17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it,
nor can it be had for jewels of gold.

18 Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention;
the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.

19 The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it;
it cannot be bought with pure gold.

20 "Where then does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding dwell?

21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,
concealed even from the birds of the air.

22 Destruction [c] and Death say,
'Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.'

23 God understands the way to it
and he alone knows where it dwells,

24 for he views the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.

25 When he established the force of the wind
and measured out the waters,

26 when he made a decree for the rain
and a path for the thunderstorm,

27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it;
he confirmed it and tested it.

28 And he said to man,
'The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
and to shun evil is understanding.' "

Proverbs 30:6
Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
2 Peter 1:20-22
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 1:19-21
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit

I agree with Texas mom and would also like to add that Jesus spoke against people who taught things not found in the scripture

This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.
Mark 7:6-9

making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
Mark 7:13

Jesus wanted people to only follow the word and not man made traditions.

Have you ever actually READ the Bible? The Bible DOES say that it is the only authority in religious matters:

He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. (John 12:48)

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: (2 Peter 1:3)

Since it furnishes unto ALL good works and supplies ALL things that pertain to life & godliness, nothing else is needed. And besides if we add anything else...

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (Revelation 22:18-19)

you received't discover one of those verse, because the Bible did not exist at the same time as the books of the Bible were written. The Bible, as we've it at present, replaced into written over many centuries through many writers. It replaced into compiled through the Council of Nicea, centuries after the Apostles died. there have been many, many books to pick on from, and the compilers had to pick what replaced into scripture and what wasn't. They discarded many, many books that would were lined, yet they'd a decision to make. i'm effective that the writers of the distinct books under no circumstances dreamed that what they wrote will be lined in a unmarried volume of scripture for thousands and thousands and thousands and thousands to ascertain.
