I saw it demonstrated on the Early Show (on CBS) a few days back. They did it outside using 2 liter bottles of diet Coke and had a clear tube holding the mentos over the bottle. When they pulled the stick holding the Mentos and they dropped into the soda, it really spewed up.

No but I have put Skittles in a glass of Coke before, the colouring comes off the Skittles completely and if u then drink the Coke you'll be bouncing off the walls all night- free buzz!!

I've known about it for years, and I'm amazed it's only recently been in the papers. You can use polos too, but only certain types (but alas, I'm not sure which ones), which is what we used in school - not as a science experiment, but just for a laugh.
