Brown sugar and molasses are both made from sugar cane. White sugar can be too, but all of the sugar cane flavors are taken out so it is more pure. If you are going for the flavor, molasses is a good substitute. It has a much stronger flavor though. So if your recipe calls for a cup of brown sugar, you might want to use 3/4 cup of white sugar and 1/4 cup of molasses.

I agree you need to specify what you're making but typically, molasses would be a suitable substitute for the flavor and sweetness.

i just looked it up in the betty crocker cook book emergency substututions it says 1 cup granulated sugar , plus 2 tablespoons molasses
