In the Politics and Government section, most of the questions are thinly-veiled rhetoric, masquerading as a legitimate "question".

Have you ever watched a press conference from the White House? Half the "questions" posed to the President are blatant posturing. They don't qualify as questions because the question itself is worded in such a way as to imply an answer. It would be like asking, "Do you think that pregnant female prisoners should be allowed to give birth before being executed?"

Oh wait..... that was a REAL question, and Al Gore said he'd have to think about it further.

Absolutely people try to persuade. When you answer a question on here about travel, you either persuade the person to do or not do. If you answer about politics, the left or right will battle it out. Most people who answer questions are persuasive in their answers.

Absolutely, people try to persuade with their "leading" questions, and you'll get a bunch of politicos with marching orders to target a number of sites. You see this in marketing, too. A new tween "star" comes out and suddenly people are hired to pretend to be teenagers and chat in those chatrooms. I think people of all political stripes are trying to get in front of the most current media with their agendas and make as big of a splash as possible, with as large of a ripple effect from other people's comments ("buzz"), as possible.

One important thing that I note is whether this political activity is done unethically, i.e., by getting opinions into news reports (which are SUPPOSED to be fact-based), using the drone of friendly "news" outlets (see: Fox "News" for conservatives, or the Washington Times), and playing emotional games with people to get them to act irrationally ("nine-eleven-nine-eleven-nine-eleven-nine-eleven").

There are also people who don't even bother with the formality of phrasing a "question," political or otherwise. It's common here and unfortunately the only way to deal with it is a lot of moderators. C'est la vie!

Interesting,I never thought about it before. Seems possible though unlikely. This forum is certainly worth it in spite of potential "abusers" though. Think of all the people who are helped and ideas that are exchanged!

Well I agree that there are people on here who are downright opinionated but they are not looking to persuade anyone to their ideals- if they have them- no they just like arguing
and occasionally copying answers
