Stick to a premium brand of dog food such as EVO, INNOVA, Millenium, Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Wellness, California Natural, etc., and you won't need anything else. Don't buy dog food that has "meat by products", brewers rice, corn meal, wheat midlings, etc They're all fillers. Science Diet gets rave reviews from a lot of people, mainly because vets get free samples and an incentive to sell it. Look at the ingredient list and put the bag back on the shelf. For treats you can use cooked chicken, meat, apples, and carrots. DO NOT give your dog grapes, raisins, onions or chocolate. They can make your dog very sick or even kill it.

Dogs really shouldn't have human food. A good quality dog food will give a dog all of the nutrition he/she needs. A small piece of meat or a little bit of veggies here and there won't hurt but don't do it more than a few times a month. Try Purina Beneful....it's inexpensive, good quality and has meet and vegetables in it. NEVER give a dog- candy, grapes, raisins, coffee, chocolate (or any caffeine) or milk. These things are not good for dogs and some of them can be fatal if ingested.

The best foods for dogs are those made for dogs. If you have a dog older than a year, you should feed him/her twice a day. You should feed a mix of dry food/wet food. Then a dry food meal. The dry food helps scrape tartar off your dog's teeth, but brushing is also necessary. People food is not recommended as it causes digestion problems and gas. Occasionally, it is okay to feed a dog a little bit of chicken or ham, but mix it in with their regular food.
I would suggest you give your dog some Nylon chews. NOT RAWHIDES! Rawhides are bad for dogs, as are greenies. They have been known to bunch up in a dog's digestive system. Just be sure you don't give too many treats or your dog will pack on the pounds.
DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT feed your dog: garlic, tomatoes, brocolli, nuts, chocolate, alchol of any kind, cabbage, onions, or raisens.

As far as brand i would recommend either Purina or Hills Science Diet. Carrots are also great for dogs. Cottage cheese in small amounts can help ease an upset stomach, just be sure not to give too much because they have trouble with the dairy if they get a lot of it.

Am I correct in assuming that you already feed your dog dog food & are asking what types of people foods are good to add or give as treats? First, if your dog is being fed a good dog food (a premium name brand food, not a cheap brand), then you don't NEED to supplement with people food. If you want to give occasional bits of people food, then choose things like carrots, green beans, bits of chicken (no bones), pasta, rice, potatoes. Stay away from richer meats like pork or turkey and things like gravy & sauces. Remember these 3 things though:
(1.)Some dogs have sensitive stomachs & some people food can cause pancreatitis.
(2.) Any people food you give adds calories, so account for that when feeding or you may wind up with a FAT dog!
(3.) Some people food is toxic to pets.

Great Question!!
Dog Food is of course the Healthiest, Obvious choice. Then, if you approve, just 1 piece of scrap from the table. I am only talking about meat. A small piece of cooked burger, steak, rib, hot dog. I see people feeding their dogs french fries, BUT DOGS SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY KINDS OF POTATOS. This is where the arguing comes in. People tell me, I feed my dog Anything I want & the dog is still livin'. O.K. fine for your dog. There is a list of foods not to give dogs, & for very good reasons.

It would be best to feed your dog only a good quality dog food for it's proper age group. Adding a bunch of extra this and thats will make him picky and you will end up having to change it all the time.Unless he has a medical condition dog food, fresh water, exercise and vet care and treats sometimes should be all he needs.

I've raised quite a few dogs in my time... I approve of Science Diet. It's a bit more expensive, but it does WONDERS for the coat. If you're raising registered animals for show, then Science Diet is the way to go. I agree with others, DO NOT feed chocolate. (or chicken or rib bones. the splinters break off and can injure the dogs insides.) Otherwise, it's perfectly fine to feed a dog table scraps from time to time to show that extra bit of love and affection haha!

Veggies are fine as long as they're raw and of a size that the dog can't choke on them. Even fruits such as apples. Of course you still need to give them a good balanced dog food. My dog loves carrots, bell peppers and granny smith apples!
