When I am asked for money on the street I always give them something - even change. One never knows if this person is really in need, and if they aren't, it's not my problem. I am a Christian and I feel it's the right thing to do. Once I needed a couple of quarters to call home and I had no money at all on me. I swallowed my pride and asked. I got the person's address and offered to send the money to them, but they refused. Of course I wouldn't give anyone a great deal of money, maybe offer to pay for a hamburger for them.

It depends. If it is people collecting for charity, I might give my small change but sometimes I say I already regularly give to a registered charity (which I do). Yesterday, I was having my lunch in Subway and noticed a particularly smelly man in there eating his lunch and having a coke or something. Half and hour later, I walked past him in a shop doorway and he was begging for money for a cup of tea. To people like him, I just say 'sorry, I have no spare change'. It's not that I'm mean or anything, but this bloke was wearing a leather jacket and apart from the stench of B.O. his clothes were pretty clean.

Nothing whatsoever. I pretend I do not hear. It may sound cruel, but there's plenty of wealthy tourists walking by (this in Santa Cruz, CA), and they are better able to come up with money than I am. I walk by the same spots every day, and would go broke if I tried to keep up with them. I see the same ones every day. I'm unemployed, and don't feel guilty (much) about not helping.
Also, I think it's silly to ask a woman, who has to go digging in her purse, when a man can just reach in his pocket, and also impress the girl he's with that he's a generous guy, she should appreciate him more, etc.

Althought I know most of the people on the street are just using a canned line a friend of mine from college told me about how her dad had lost his job and he was was in another city interviewing. He ran out of Gasoline. He had no money on him and his credit card was maxed out buying babyfood and diapers for her. (This was before calling cards, debit cards, and cellphones. ) He didnt have enough cash on him to get back home to his family. One Gentleman gave him 10 dollars (This was also before gas was $0.99 a gallon) for gas. My friend told myself and my roomates that she and her family Make sure they give Money if they have excess to homeless and needy people. And this is why
"For every 99homeless people that are liars there Is ONE guy that truly needs the help. And to repay the gentleman that helped our family we try to help who we can. Why should one man suffer because 99 others take advantage of people's goodwill"
To this day if I have money or change on me I give it to the homeless.
One night my fiance gave a man his sweaty shirt off his back. Evidently the homeless guy had been beaten up and had his clothes stolen from him. The guy gladly took it.
(I think that is the single moment that I have been more proud of my fiance ever)
You will probably spend that quarter on a soda that makes you fat. The homeless guy might spend his quarter on food that will help him live to fight another day.

I say I don't have any cash on me, just my atm card. I feel bad for them, but they really can go to a shelter and get food, etc. Make a donation there if you want. :)
I say this, because I used to have a bleeding heart and have even given my last dollar away only to realize the lady used the same line the very next week. (my car ran out of gas I just need $5.00 to get home....)

I've told a guy to wait. I went into a liquor store bought a 40 oz beer and gave him the beer. Then I told him that I did not want him wasting my money in a church.

2 things.
When they ask if I have spare change, I say: None of my money is spare.
Sometimes, I just say NO! Then I look them in the eye and tell them to remember my face and never to ask me again for the rest of their lives.
It works!

If I have some change in my pocket, I'll give it to them. If I don't, I just tell them that I don't have any money on me. I don't feel comfortable opening my purse and digging around for my wallet in front of total strangers begging for money.

It depends on how I feel and what the circumstances are when they ask. Sometimes I give them some money...sometimes I don't. Either way it makes me sad.

Oh jeez... it depends on my mood and how needy they look...
Sometimes I give in and give them money... sometimes I say I don't have any (I only do this if I feel I might be endangered) and there have been times where I just look straight ahead and act deaf.
It's difficult for me not to give to those in need.
