I am an Irishman (back) in Italy for almost 6 years now, but I am married to an Italian woman (from Naples) for 24 years. I speak Italian fluently.

Italy is very beautiful, the food very good (though not as great as people will tell you it is...authentic Chinese is infinitely better), and the architecture spectacular.

But, for positive things, I would stop there.

The rest really is a collection of idiotic superfluities, egotistical hedonism, shallow thinking, the most expensive yet weakest education system in Europe (I am a teacher in a University here, and I am 100% confident that Italians would beat hands down any contest to find the most politically ignorant people in the Western world), there are endless Mommy's boys everywhere - it is far from unusual for 45 year old men to still live with their Momma who does everything except wipe his *** for him, it's absolutely FILTHY here (rubbish everywhere...the landscape is used as a tipping ground for anything and everything), sacred and globally important buildings have 'Loredana, you're a f**king whore' sprayed in big letters on the side of them, politicians are particularly and spectacularly corrupt, the legal system is a joke (except, it's just not funny), Italians are xenophobic in the extreme, women are treated at a level with street whores, everyone wants to rip you off as soon as they hear that you are not a native Italian, nobody knows how to say please or thank you, and try changing $20 to Euro...even in big cities you will NOT find a place that will do it for you without taking 50% in commission.

In short, a nation with no future.

I come from London but now live in Italy. Realistically there are good and bad points in every country but the country is fascinating, the weather especially in the south is fantastic, the history and culture is so different from Northern Europe.Their lives are based not on working 24 hours a day, they want to really live. I love the food, naturally grown. For dinner, I am able to go into the garden and pick the vegetables all natural with no chemical sprays, and there is a big difference in the taste of natural products than the products we buy at the super store. The country is so diverse depending which part you are in. I love the country, however to live here takes some getting used to, they have their own rules and legal system which takes some getting used to and if you don't like to wait and like reliability, then southern Italy is not for you, because no one gives a damn. Everybody does what they like, some people like this, others don't. It is an individual thing. But you will never know unless you try!

For me, Italy is my ideal of a vacation spot, though I have yet to go. We're planning, my mom, sister, and I, to go next spring for my sister's big 50 birthday. We've checked into Trafalgar vacations which appear to be well priced and give you a lot. We're thinking of doing Rome, Venice, and Florence. I've known at least three people that have gone and say that it was incredible, especially Rome. You can't beat the history and I would imagine the Tuscan scenery will be beautiful (if you haven't seen the movie "Under The Tuscan Sun" rent it and snuggle on the sofa to watch it!). I've heard that the Italian people are great, and personally I can't wait to try the food. With the exception of Naples, which is supposed to be a dangerous city to visit, I can't think of any reason not to go!!!
