We (as a society) kill those who commit the most atrocious crimes so that we can show those who are living that there are consequences to actions. We would hope that the prospect of death would detour folks from participating in such heinous atrocities but, obviously it doesn't. People are a become increasingly depraved and indifferent. Personally I think we should do away with the death penalty, its senseless.

I am from the UK where the death penalty has not been here for over 40 yrs. I think that because it is not in this country we are seeing more and more murders. The teenagers carry knives around in their schools, and over the last few weeks we hear on the news of several kids have been stabbed. Perhaps if we still had the death penalty perhaps it wouldn't be quite so bad as it is now. Since the London Bombings last year the police are on high alert and it seems now it doesn't matter if you are armed or not they will shot youif they suspect you might be a terrorist. They shot and killed a guy on the underground last year and in the last week they raided a house and shot a guy and arrested others, held them for days then relest them and it took the press to get some kind of appoligy for them. As far as i am aware they didn't
put up a fight or posed any threat to the police. As far as i am aware they are suppose to warn that they will open fire if the person/s do not conform with their demands. i am not aware that this was the case in either occurance. they just opened fire.

This question is something that I struggle with, because I can understand both sides of the argument. On the one hand, killing murderers means that they won't kill again, and it also serves as a deterrent--some people, knowing that they might be put to death, will hesitate before killing someone. On the other hand, the death penalty can be seen as morally wrong, and the fact that one is killing someone who has killed makes killing him no less so. I personally do not favor the death penalty, but I'm not exactly against it, either. It's a difficult subject.

I think in SOME cases the death penalty is called for. I suppose for the families of crime victims "an eye for an eye" may seem like justice. However, this is something that I struggle with. I am not sure that I could forgive someone who killed a loved one, however I could forgive a psychotic person....and some killers are genuinely mentally ill. I would not want him executed, however. I would refuse to be on a jury deciding for life or the death penalty--it would be too painful, and too heavy a responsibility.

All right an honest answer:
By elevating the level of punishment it is hoped that people will refrain from killing other people.
If the worst thing you could suffer for killing people was three meals a day a roof over your head and free medical care, everyone would be doing it.

Because it's more for use as a deterrent. However, 2 things need to be said..
1. the person doing the killing knows that it is wrong and they also know the consequences, so it is their choice...stop feeling sorry for them.
2. I'd rather someone who killed, be killed, than to pay for them to sit in jail for the rest of their lives. Thats why taxes are sooo high...

The Death Penalty is not about showing that killing is wrong it is about eliminating the possibility that someone who has done something which is "heinous, atrocious, and cruel" will never be in society harming other law abiding citizens. FYI, the Death Penalty also applies to the rape of a child in Louisiana and South Carolina.

Because it is the only way to be 100% sure they will never kill again.
When they are sentenced to a life time if freebies, there is always the chance they might escape.

We kill people who MURDER other people to show that we value innocent life, and when one murders another, one's own life is then forfeit.
Killing people for just reasons is not wrong. It never has been. Morally, spiritually or ethically. It is a just punishment for heinous crimes against other people.

Because there needs to be some type of appropriate punishment for taking someone's life. Is it appropriate to allow them to live life in prison, being allowed to breathe every day when they've taken the life of someone innocent while taxpayers support you? I say if they're willing to take an innocent life, they're making the choice to give their life up.
