The cities of the plain were destroyed as a warning for all that this same event will happen again one day to the wicked. One would think God is capable of preserving this ancient lesson for us to see and learn from.
"Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens" Genesis 19:24. "Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly" II Peter 2:6. (The word for "example" means an exhibit for warning.)

The sins of Sodom and Gomorrah were so vile and so evil,
the earth beneath could no longer bear the wickedness. Not
just sex sins but sins that would have encroached on other
cultures and societies and would have eventually destroyed
mankind itself. Anyway, God urban renewall plan for these two cities should give you a hint of how bad manners can corrupt.

God destroyed Sodom & Gomorrah because its citizens did not practice hospitality to the stranger. It had nothing to do with homosexuality (as so many misread). Further, this "righteous" Lot, in his attempt to save his guests from the crowd, was set to throw his virgin daughters out to be raped and killed--except that his wife (soon to be pillar of salt) did not allow it. What does that say about Biblical family values, folks?

"And the Lord said, 'Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave...'"
Genesis 18:20
It was so wicked that the people did and thought evil continually. There wasn't enough good in it for it to be spared. God promised Abraham that if He found 10 righteous, He wouldn't destroy it. There weren't even 10 righteous people--I'd say it was pretty evil.

Sexual misconduct; specifically fornication, rape, and homosexuality.
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Well, the Bible states that it was because of homosexual promiscuity, but most likely, it was due to an excess of bitumen that caused liquifaction which created a landslide thus sending Sodom and Gomorrah into ruin.

Some say homosexuality. Some say lack of hospitality. From my Biblical studies and thought process, I think it was due to Idol Worship. Asherah poles were, I think, fertility gods that controlled the crops of the people. These gods demanded sexual sacrifices in any and all forms, human to animal, between the same sex, probably even with children. I think the men of those towns were trying to perform sacrificial sexual acts with the angels that came to their town. They probably didn't know they were angels, but what difference does that make. These people did not worship the one true God so he took care of them.

It was said to be a city of sin. Flagrantly breaking comandments, worshiping false idols, full of rape and theivery, adultry, murder, pretty much any sin you could think of. I think of it more as a parable though, meaning that if a place existed where these things ran rampart the "hand of God" would smite them.

The homosexuals in that city tried to overtake God's two angels who were with Lot and his family. When Lot, his family and the angels left the city, there was no righteousness left in the city and it was destroyed.

Don't remember all the details but he destroyed it because of all the sins that people were commiting, there was crime, prostitution you name it. Kind of reminds me of the way things seem now in many parts of the world.
