The media has taught us that one night stands are the hottest sex that someone can have. They are the kind of sex that starts in a seedy bar or club somewhere, and ends in hotel with you beside someone who’s name you’re not quite sure you remember, but you’re still smiling with the afterglow anyway. Not all of them are as memorable as that, but most still have a lot of potential. So, why is it that many of us avoid or even fear them?
While the media teaches us one set of values and beliefs, the societies in which we are raised teach us another. In many ways, we live in a prudish society. While there are some solidly logical reasons behind this, there are excesses as well. Sexually transmitted diseases are not something to be minimized. However, like any risk, there are smart ways to manage your exposure to that risk.

No, it's not a "total lack of respect for another as well as ones self". Some people just like to get "laid" every once and a while without all of the complications like calling that person...starting a relationship with them, etc... I know some established professors, lawyers, and psychiatrists who have "one night stands". It had nothing to do with a character flaw. Just the desire to have a sexual explosion. No harm in that. Don't be so ignorant or judgmental, just because YOU don't agree with it.

well then its not for you, that doesn't make the people who do it bad people or people with character flaws, alot of more open minded people would consider your narrow view of things a character flaw they might also consider the fact that you think its your right to judge them just because their beliefs are different than yours a serious character flaw, in fact i think every single person i've ever met would see you that way. the fact is that two consenting adults agreeing to have sex is nobodys business but theirs. as long as everyone knows that it is what it is and nobody gets hurt its all good and perhaps you need to lighten up a little. or look in the mirror before you start making such vast generalizations about people..or is the real problem that nobody is interested in even a one night stand with you so that makes you angry so you start making judgments about the people that can get it? you sound like such a sad little person to me, i hope things get better for you!

I've never had one (I guess, I'd better say "yet"), but my ex-fiance's roomie was into casual sex. She bedded two of my college apartment mates, and my best friend at home, that I was aware of. My ex told me of many other encounters. She was just really into having sex as a component of friendship. She was so casual about it, my ex and I were staying with her parents so we could attend her wedding, and the morning of, she came into the bedroom in just her bra and panties. She drove me crazy when she did things like that, 'cause she was well put together.
I didn't understand the behavior, don't particularly condone it, but in situational ethics, must confess if a good looking women approached me with the proposition - you can have me right now, but after this you'll never have another chance, I can't say I wouldn't do it. Call me flawed, stripe me with low self-esteem, but sex is sex!

A 'one night stand' means you date, some times have sex with, another. Haven't you ever went out with someone, totally w/e, only to find they lacked other stuff and you never went out again? Well, that's a one night stand!

You would be right. If they do one night stands they probably have VD or they could have AIDS. 44 million people do.
That is more than was killed in ww11
Do you want to take that chance? You sleep with everyone he slept with before he got to you. Could be quite a few.
I wouldn't even accept an E mail with that many attatchments for fear of a virus.

Usually, they start out with a few cocktails, and the guy tries to be witty, funny, and charming even though he's just doing it to get some, and the girl tries to act interested in what he's saying and tries to appear to believe him. Then they go back to his place and have sex. That answers how people have one night stands.

sure, yet except there is an effortless interest contained in the fellow who is going further than sex...a second evening stand is many times in no way as reliable because the first even as each and every little thing grow to be interesting and new! in case you loved the fellow earlier hand in spite of the undeniable fact that, the second one evening may be extra effectual, the third evening even extra effectual......on till about the single hundredth evening or so, then it receives previous.

What's the problem? If two people agree to do so, they don't harm anyone else.
I think it's a sign of a strong character to be honest to each other and not "play" feelings just wanting to enjoy sex.

Because it's fun, that is why people do it. There's not respect involved because none is needed. It's a one-night stand - you have it, and you go along your merry ways - it's all fun (considering it's safe). People just make sex more than what it actually is.
