I have these nightmares that started when I was about thirteen. Most of the time it's about spiders chasing me, when I wake up it is usually because I screamed myself awake, or when I turned on the light in my sleep. Sometime I run in my sleep and my mom woke up one night and she found me on top of the security gate screaming and kicking at something. Sometimes it's not so severe, but I'm getting tired of waking up with my heart beating a thousand times a minute and feeling scared like hell. It's strange because I don't feel threatened before I go to bed or anything. And when I wake up because of one it takes only a few minutes and I'm back to normal. When will this ever stop and do you have any advice?

And strange enough, I'm not really afraid of spiders when I'm awake, the other day one jumped on my hand and I was perfectly calm and put it on the ground.

This comes from a site called Dream Moods:
To see a spider in your dream, indicates that you are feeling like an outsider in some situation. Or that you may want to keep your distance and stay away from an alluring and tempting situation. The spider is also symbolic of feminine power. Alternatively, a spider may refer to a powerful force protecting you against your self-destructive behavior. If you kill a spider, it symbolizes misfortune and general bad luck.
To see a spider spinning a web in your dream, signifies that you will be rewarded for your hard work. You will soon find yourself promoted in your job or recognized for your achievement in a difficult task. Spiders are a symbol of creativity due to the intricate webs they spin. On a negative note, spiders may indicate a feeling of being entangled or trapped in a sticky or clingy relationship. It represents some ensnaring and controlling force. You may feel that someone or some situation is sucking the life right out of you.
To see a spider climbing up a wall in your dream, denotes that your desires will be soon be realized.
To dream that you are bitten by a spider, represents a conflict with your mother or some dominant female figure in your life. The dream may be a metaphor for a devouring mother or the feminine power to possess and entrap. Perhaps you are feeling trapped by some relationship.
I don;t know if this will help determine what the reason you having these nightmares, But I do know this site is incredible accurate. For me in any case.

You definitely need a sleep study! Often, when you are not breathing regularly in your sleep, your heart beats faster to get enough oxygen into your body and brain and you then begin to dream a dream that is frightening.
If you are not afraid of spiders, then I would suspect that you are having sleep apnea, which just means you stop breathing repeatedly in your sleep without knowing it.
Sleep studies can be made many places now, so ask at your local hospital or county health department where you can get one. These nightmares could vanish with the right diagnosis.
Wishing you the best!

nightmares are generally an indication of how your unconcious is as opposed to how you think you are doing. Though nobody can at this point prove what nigthmares mean, most dream interpretation suggests spiders signify either a controlling relationship you're entangled in or feeling like an outsider in some situation though if you are afraid of spiders they could also represent your fears. The fact that these nightmares are recurrent perhaps suggest you are ignoring your fears but this is damaging to your unconcious. Either face your fears or maybe get a few counselling sessions just to sit and talk through them with you: when problems in real life are solved, nightmares generally follow

Well I don't know how old you are now, but if these nightmares are recurring that often I would be concerned. Mainly because of the stressful reaction you're having, that's not healthy. Are you scared of spiders when you're awake? You should see a therapist and get them to help you with this if it has been going on for more than a few months (look for a psychologist that specializes in Cognitive/Behavioral therapy). I wouldn't expect it to go away on its own.

Look into lucid dreaming. It is a technique you can practice so that you will eventually have control of your dreams. That way if you start to have a bad dream, while you are asleep you can change the course of your dream. If you were to see a spider in your dream, try to step on it and then move to some thing that is positive such as your favorite thing to do, or favorite place to go. There are a lot of websites and books that describe techniques for lucid dreaming. One thing that worked for me is before you go to sleep, repeat a phrase you can use in your sleep to end the bad dream. If you do this enough, your subconscience will memorize it and you will be able to use it in your sleep such as "wake up (your name), wake up, it's only a dream". I hope this helps, good luck :)

I have very strange creepy dreams sometimes as well about things chasing me. I have never sleep walked but have woke up freaking out and brushing things off me that weren't there or I have jumped out of bed freaking out a couple of times. Unfortunately, there is no difinitve answer to your question. No one knows what goes on in your subconscious, and why you dream of certain things. Something may be bothering you, could be stress, could be you feel guilty about something. Sleepwalking is very dangerous however, which is why I also recommend going to a doctor.

I had nightmares when I was very young and I also would sleep walk. I often would wake up screaming and crying. My nightmares were always about something scratching at my bedroom window with very long claws and it would always be raining outside. My nightmares stopped suddenly at the age of about 7. But at the age of 17 I suddenly had another nightmare. Now at the age of 25 I haven't had another since. I think nightmares are a representation of something in your life which you are very afraid of. As a child I was very afraid of thunderstorms and heavy rains. I would almost go into a panic attack whenever either one started.
