Of course asking his wife is an option! She's your new sister-in-law. You'll have to get to know her sometime, why not start now with a phone call? Or if you think that will be too awkward, how about an e-mail? She's part of your family now, the mother of your little baby niece/nephew. I think making an effort to know his new family might bring on that teary-eyed feeling you are after. Good luck, and congrats on the new baby in the family!!

Hmmm... tough one. Stop by your local Hallmark and explain the situation.
Since you've never seen the baby and don't know much about the wife, pictures might be hard to come by.
Get him a really nice card (for sure) and maybe a plaque or picture frame so he can put his favorite baby picture in it?
Hallmark also sells (used to sell?) a book that's like a journal where he can fill in thoughts on specific subjects for his kids to read when they get older - but it's all from the perspective of being a father.

Give Dad an Adventure Gift If Dad used to enjoy living on the edge, surprise him with an adventure gift that will wow the thrill seeker in him. Many companies now provide unique experiences for people who crave for something different. Check out websites selling vouchers for unique experiences such as rally driving, V8 racing, flight simulation, skydiving, aerobatic joy flights, high-speed jet boat riding, caving and abseiling. A word of caution, though. Don’t buy Dad a thrilling adventure gift if he has a weak heart!

Do you have any pics of your brother as a baby with your dad?....Send it in a special frame saying. Hope your child brings you just as much joy as you brought to us. Also I would include the wife in this.....what a better bond maker than all of you working together to make this a special day for your brother! You say you don't know her well.....This is your chance. Include her, and she becomes family and not just the brothers wife!...Good luck!

All of these answers are wonderful and thoughtful so I won't answer but I will ask you a question. Why won't you ask your brother's wife (your sister-in-law) for some ideas? Because you don't know her is not a very good excuse. Try getting to know her. She's part of your family now.

Fly there to see him, what an awesome surprise they'll be.. But you would have to talk his wife.
Or, send him some tickets to come see you.. I know nether of these answers are cheap..
OK, here's a less expensive one.. Make a tape of everyone, and let him know how happy you are, for him and his wife and how much y'all miss him.. They'll get the tears Rollin!
I hope this helps

PICTURES AND A CARD ARE ALWAYS REALLY GOOD. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO MAKE HIM CRY, SEND YOURSELF, TAKE A VACATION AND SURPRISE HIM.
