Cats usually have 5 toes on each forepaw, and 4 on each hind paw. Poly- or hyperdactyl cats have more than the usual 18 digits on their paws, although it occurs more frequently on the front feet. Any breed of cat (or even other animals, including humans) can show this trait, although it is quite common in the Maine **** cats (40%). The cats can have one or more extra toes on a paw, usually on the thumb side or an extra dewclaw (undeveloped toe or thumb). Some owners report this gives their cats unique abilities that other cats don't have, like being able to open boxes.

Polydactyl cat
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A polydactyl cat is one which has an abnormal number of digits on its paws. In animals including humans, polydactyly (or polydactylism, also known as hyperdactyly) is the anatomical abnormality of having more than the usual number of digits on the hands or feet. Polydactyly is a congenital abnormality, usually genetically inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. It seems to be most commonly found in cats along the eastern coast of the United States and in South West England.

Normal cats have five toes on each front paw and four toes on each hind paw. Polydactyl cats may have as many as seven digits on front and/or hind paws, and various combinations of anywhere from four to seven are common, although each of the front and rear paws are typically the same. A common variation is six toes on the front paws, with two opposing digits on each, (comparable in use to human thumbs). This feature enables the cat to learn and perform feats of manual dexterity generally not observed in non-polydactyl cats, such as opening latches on some cabinets, doors and windows.

As far as what you would call such a cat? It won't matter, they ignore you! :-)

Are you sure it has extra toes? Sometimes the one that is supposed to be short, kinda like your thumb, just grows to the same length as the other ones. I know I've had two of them.

In Key West Florida they call them Hemingway Cats. Hemingway lived there for many years and has a whole colony of six toed cats living on his property.

I forget specifiacally what they're called, but you can refer to them as "Hemmingway Cats". Ernest Hemmingway was at one time, I believe, to have housed multiple six toed cats. That is also one of the reasons for the large population of six toed cats in the Maine area.

I raise Desert Lynx kittens, and have bred for Polydactol (6toes). I hope I spelled it correctly.
