Living together is very different from just being a couple. You learn habits and vices of people that you never imagined would exist. Plus, you end up being with each other a lot more often than when you didn't live together. A pair of best friends can have known each other their whole lives, then move in together and have the same problems as a couple might. It takes time and effort to adjust to living together for many people.

You never really know someone till you live with them. That's why they say the first year of being married is the toughest - getting to know the other person. Both of you have to compromise - a lot.

Even if you've known somebody your whole life, it will be much different if you live in the same house as them.

Simply - People are on their best behavior when they're dating. You can't keep that up 100% of the time, so you begin to see little things about each other that begin to bug you. If there's no compromise, then it will never work. Both sides must be willing to put up with a few imperfections.
