Dear Future Pilot,

I wanted to be a pilot ever since I was about 6 years old. It took me about 30 years before I actually decided to do it. Don't you wait like I did!

To be eligible for a student pilot certificate, an applicant must:

(a) Be at least 16 years of age for other than the operation of a glider or balloon.

(b) Be at least 14 years of age for the operation of a glider or balloon.

Hang on to your dream!

In the United States, you need to be 17 years old to receive a private pilot certificate. You need to be 18 to get a commercial or flight instructor certificate and 23 to get an air transport pilot certificate. However, you can get a student pilot certificate at 16, which is all you really need to learn how to fly. In fact, you only need a student pilot certificate to fly solo, so you can do flight training at any age.

You can take ground school and instructed flight lessons at any age. Kids have flown planes at 12 with an instructor alongside, but reaching the rudder pedals is an issue.

Once you are 17, you can solo. Which is a required part of your training before you can get your private pilot's license. Some people have gotten enough practice (usually with their instructor/father) to pass their check ride on their 17th birthday. Last year, one young woman passed both her visual and instrument check rides on her 17th birthday. (That's a LOT of prep work!)

Check out your local airport flight school for ground school. Also offered cheaply at some junior colleges.

You can begin flying with an instructor at any age which you can see over the cowling. Where age comes into play is with a student solo. You need a student medical certificate in order to fly solo, and this is avaliable to those age 16 and older. To take the practical test to get your full license, you need to be 17.

I believe the age is 16, but you may be able to start instruction prior to that. Go to www.faa.gov You'll find information there.
