Ok I see so many answers to questions here that say "Go to your doctor" Do you not think that they already know that!? To those of you who constantly write that how about trying to educate them so when they go to the doctor they know what they are talking about and can ask the right questions!

If you must say it how about saying it nicely like at the end of your helpful information write but I think you should check with your doctor just to be sure. Just in case they are not intellegent enough to figure that out for themselves.

Thank you.

Ok now apparently some people are misunderstanding... they want to know about the condition...not if they should go to the doctor...

Ok Richard...It isn’t about medical advice! It is about educating one’s self so when they do go to the doctor they are not talking out their butts… that is what the doctor is looking for too. Makes everyone’s lives easier.

lol I agree!! When I asked my question about my son people helpful answers were what helpped me find out what was wrong with my son. I was able to go to the doc and say "is it this?" and they were able to check him out for it instead of going blindly at it.

That is why if I can offer advice or personal experience I do, but sometimes I do remind ppl if they are concerned to double check with the doc. But I totally agree with your statement!

I think maybe some folks are trying to just get more points on yahoo.

Whenever I answer a question and the answer has "go to the doctor" in it, I try to tell them why and also refer them to call a nurse line with the symptoms first.

Of course at the end, to protect myself, I put a disclaimer about how this is not considered medical advice and one should seek professional medical advice only from licensed professionals.

So, I guess there are many answers for me alone. I am sure there are a few reasons out there that other folks write it too, aside from just being lazy I mean.

"Go to your doctor" is not always advise that is "good" anyway. The doctor will usually be very quick to write a prescription for a synthetic drug, NOT work with a patient to look at the cause and try to bring about healing without drugs first. The pharmaceutical industry is heavily imbedded within the medical community financially.

If you must see a doctor and feel the doctor has most of the answers, try researching what is ailing you online on informative websites that are meant for medical research. That way you WILL arm yourself with knowledge first. But you are right, you SHOULD know the questions to ask doctors. ALWAYS question doctors.

You would be surprised how many people underestimate the seriousness of a medical problem they or someone else is experiencing. I once saw a question on here from a woman who was all mad at her son because he gave his Ritalin to a friend of his. The friend was passed out on the bedroom floor and he, in her own words, "refused to wake up". It never seemed to dawn on this woman that she was probably dealing with an overdose and needed to call an ambulance.

I also think a lot of people are afraid of getting sued for giving wrong medical advice. They say "go to the doctor" so they can avoid that and still get the points they're looking for.

That being said there are also people who blow simple problems WAY out of proportion. I've seen people advising others to go to the ER for things like sunburns or a mild fever.

Well, because they are asking for medical info and we are not experts. I agree that helpful advice is great. I do offer it but most of the time my simple answer isn't going to be enough. Also, some of these questions could have serious implications. Someone asked about a pain in her side. That could be anything - gas, endometriosis, appendicitis, ectopic pregnancy - anything. Only a doctor can answer a question like this for sure. I wouldn't want someone with this pain to treat themselves with an antacid because I said it might be gas and then die because they had an ectopic pregnancy. So - I give my advice which incluses 'Talk to your doctor'.

A lot of times, people ask questions that require in-depth medical knowledge. Most of the people on here are not doctors and are not qualified to answer such questions. The best response for these questions is "hey doofus, get off your butt, stop trying to get free medical advice on Yahoo Answers, and go to a doctor."

If something were seriously wrong with me, I wouldn't be trusting the general population of Y!A to diagnose my problem. I'd want professional medical help. At the very least, if you must rely on a website, go to webmd.com. Don't assume that people here know what they're talking about. GO TO A DOCTOR.

I tell people to go to the doctor because you'd be surprised how many don't. People are often frightened to go and hear the truth. Others may have an appointment scheduled but can't get the ordeal out of their minds and just want to talk the thing out. I do give people advice if I can, but online advice from a group of strangers does not cancel out the need for professional medical care.

Listen, anyone who has a legitimate medical concern and takes that concern to the boards of Yahoo! Answers INSTEAD of a doctor deserves whatever they get. We say "go to a doctor" because it is clear that this person is too retarded to know to go to a doctor on their own. Also, why would anyone want to rely on the random diagnoses of the people on this board? No one knows who is on here and what their credentials are.

PLUS, in this day and age, if someone actually does give medical advice and then the asker follows said advice to their detriment, the adviser is opening themselves up to a lawsuit (again, this goes back to the asker being a moron and not knowing to contact a professional about their PERSONAL HEALTH).

because sometimes a question is too serious for this silly format - this is just for fun and maybe to learn something here and there

Serious questions about health issues need to be talked to with a doctor. I can't educate them because I am not the doctor - that is why doctors make so much money - so we can see them and ask them the questions and get real answers

I think people feel that they can save a few bucks and get a quick diagnosis here. What if only one person gave you an answer and it was wrong, they did not say go to the doctor and then you got worse.

We are not doctors, (ok, I am not a doctor) I do not feel people should be looking for medical advice here.
