It isn't just the marine corps that receive dog tags. I'm in the Air Force and when we get deployed everyone out there has a pair of them. Anyhow, this is what they usually have on them:
SHMOE, JOE L (Last name, first name, middle initial)
123-45-6789 (Social Security Number)
B+ (Blood type)
NO RELIG PREF (Religion prefrence)

Name, SSN, DOB, blood type and religous preference. Rank is no longer a included due to the propensity for change and wouldn't work out too well if you were captured.
