Well, without going to the doctor I would recommend cortizone-10 cream. Try it for a few days. If it persists you know what you need to do.

I really would advise you to see a doctor. But if you are dead set against seeing one, perhaps an over the counter remedy can help. Have you ever taken Benadril? It can help with the itching. Be cautious, It will make you drowsy. So if you are doing something like driving, or anything that needs 100 percent of your attention, I would say wait until you finish all of those tasks first. Before you take the Benadril, read the directions on the box for any possible side effects, or drug-interactions. I hope you can get some relief from all of the itching. I hear that an oatmeal bath will reduce itching as well.
Please think about seeing a doctor to see why this is happening. Remember, any answer, including mine, should be taken with caution. I am not a doctor, so I really cant advise you to take anything. All I can do is tell you that this seemed to work for me when I found myself in a similar situation.

Well you've already made progress by recognising that your stress makes you scratch and that it's become a vicious cycle. Keep going with that awareness, try some self-help like reducing your stress, finding alternate ways to relieve your stress and keeps your hands busy .. drawing or writing, squeezing a stressball. Try affirmations (positive self talk) they really do work - sentences you can write on post-it notes and stick on your bathroom mirror or repeat to yourself .. the more you tell yourself 'i can't stop scratching' the more you'll convince yourself that you can't.

Patronizing or not - a doctor is what you need.
Either a dermatologist or a psychologist.
I'm not sure if the stress is causing the skin condition or the skin condition is causing the stress but you need to find out before it gets embarrasing.
