I am supposed to have all of my wisdom teeth pulled tomorrow AM (including one that is broken), and I am told that they will not do it if there is an infection present. I am worried about the broken one, what symptoms should I be looking for?

An infected tooth will be sensitive to touch. Infection makes anesthesia difficult but they would most likely extract the wisdom tooth even if it had some infection...As for the response from the one asking for antibiotics. Antibiotics are great at getting rid of bacterial infections but leave you very prone to fungal infections and also lead to bacterial resistance. They should not be taken lightly and ONLY should be used when infection is present or as premedication for those with heart conditions, artificial parts, or other conditions which impare the health response. Most post-extraction infection but not all is relatively superficial (oral rinses would help these). Most severe extraction pain is due to dry socket which is caused when the blood clot dislodges and exposes bone
Good luck

When a tooth is infected, you'll know it! It will have a rotten smell to it, it will hurt when you touch it, & it will THROB like your beating heart. Your Dentist should have explained this, but for some reason, the dentists of today either assume you know, or they just don't care about being more informative with their patients. If all dentists perscribed anti-biotics AFTER extractions, there would be fewer complications. For some reason, they wait to see IF the patient gets an infection! Who needs that? I always ask for antibiotics because I know it is the best way for my mouth to heal & avoid any further pain. It should not matter if your tooth is infected or not, because it is coming out. So, don't worry about it, they'll let you know when you're in the chair tomorrow. I suggest you talk to them about antibiotics BEFORE they get the tools in your mouth! Relax, get some rest, & eat a good meal tonight, as you shouldn't eat prior to your procedure. Be sure & have some applesauce, pudding, mashed potatoes, juices & jello-o's ready for the next few days of drooling & cotton gauze in your mouth!

if it is broken they will most likely have to sedate you and break it into even more pieces to get it out. ( since wisdom teeth are the hardest to pull anyway and breaking it up inside your gum and bone is done most of the time anyway- that is why a regular dentist doesnt do it) So it largely doesnt matter if it is intact or not. If it is infected however - dont worry they might be able to do it anyway, and if not - second trip to the doctor later! yay for you lol

I think if its infected it would hurt, or bleed at the gum. I just had three of my wisdom teeth removed. All I can say is ice your face immediately. Also, take plenty of ibuprofen.

They probably should have given you that type of info to watch for warning signs.

I would assume it would be infected if it were swollen, really sore, red, etc.
