AHHHHA, Good question.

They did not NEED a "reason" .. matter of fact, in religion, the word "why" is one of those 4 letter words, you know?

They were given signs from their God that this needed done .. that should be enough reason, don't you think?? After all, is not their God the one and only, and infallible .. and talks only to the anointed??

Wait a second .. isn't this the kind of thinking that fills up nut houses??? Maybe we should be rethinking this religious stuff??

........... and quickly, before the tortures of the past are revisited on those who really need torturing now, and in the future .. like the kind of people who would ASK this question on Answers, and those who would answer the question "wrong" .. in the eyes of some god or other!

Fear. Fear that others would develop a belief system that would more accurately answer questions about humanity. Fear that if people stopped believing in the church they would lose their power to control the people and therefore be at the mercy of them instead of at the mercy of God. Also, to instill a descriptive and powerful understanding of what pain and fear are to those who might otherwise have the ability to walk away from the control of the church with no fear of God.

Heresy. The body is transitory, the soul is eternal. Torturing someone to save their soul is okay, even "good."
