I'm assuming that you mean some people keep their maiden name as their new middle name, and I think that some people do that because they want the significance of keeping part of their family identity (whether it’s simply that or because they’re the last of the “Smith” line) while also taking on their new spouse’s identity by changing their last name. As far as I know, it’s a fairly old tradition to change your middle name to your maiden name, and most people I know who’ve changed their names keep their middles name and simply drop their maiden name. However, if you’re trying to decide whether to change your last name or keep it the same, this can be a good compromise.

I made my maiden name my middle name. All of my work experience was in my maiden name so if someone wanted to check references, they needed to know my maiden name.

There's no set rules as to what middle name to use when you change your name. People do whatever they prefer. I kept my middle name because I like it. Also, it makes my initials better. It's personal preference if you want to change your middle name or not.
