People say it's selfish to commit suicide. What about not letting go of those who wish to let go?

I understand what your point is, but I also think that when a person is going through ideas of suicide, the person's judgment is not at its best at all. It may seem like a solution to problems at that moment, but when a person goes into that mindframe, it is good for another person to help take over and not let something bad happen.
A friend of mine killed herself by hanging herself. She must have felt there was no way she could deal with her life or be happy. I would not want my friends to live that way, but I also think that dark moods will pass and there will come other things and chances in life to bring more happiness. My friend will never know what those things could have been. I don't know if I'd call her "selfish" for killing herself. But I don't think she chose the best way to handle her grief.

Preservation of self is the basic instinct of all life. The desire to commit suicide in most cases indicates a mental health issue since to this violates this basic instinct.

I have heard this quote many times, and I agree with it: "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem"

I have said many times that people with depression or substance abuse problems that commit suicide are killing the wrong person.

There is nothing selfish about expecting members of a society to abide by certain rules and mores. That is what makes it a society and not a random mob. Living in a society has certain benefits and certain restraints.

Expecting members of our society to not commit suicide is no more selfish than expecting members to pull their own weight, abide by the laws, not have more children than you can support, teach those children you do have the difference between right and wrong and other basic values.

Letting people do whatever they want is simply enabling bad behavior.

Make it personal. Think of the people in your life - are you ready to let go of them?
Like one response already said - the problems are temporary, suicide is permanent.

Are you referring more to those who are sick or elderly? Who feel their "quality of life" is diminished?
My only comment there is that you have much more to give to other people than is limited by health. The last months I spent with my grandmother were wonderful times of sharing stories of her childhood and the things she had seen in her life. Stories that would have died with her, had we not had that time together. I can tell her stories to my children because she was able to tell them to me. It is a memorial to her and the kind of life she lived.

I agree. I think a person should have the right to decide when it is time for them to go AS LONG AS they have a sane mind when they are making the decision. Specifically, like not sufferring from depression.

It's not selfish when you care about others. Keeping another human being alive is not doing for yourself it's doing something for others.

Because suicide is self-murder and a sign of insanity.
