I find that most people who ask, "how are you doing?" whiz right by me. Even if I wanted to answer them, I don't have the opportunity to do so. They're already gone. So what I've figured out is that they're just using that as a way of saying hello.

So whenever somebody asks me that question, "How are you doing?" I just say, "Hello" and nod my head to them. I acknowledge that person, because it's the polite thing to do.

However, if they're interested in starting a conversation with me, they can start by introducing themselves. For example, that person could say, "Hello, my name is..." Then, I think when they ask that question, they sincerely want to know your answer.

Like I said, I think it's just a strange way of saying hello. :-) I hope that helps!

I completely agree. I really don't like it when people ask "how are you doing" in cases where it is used casually as a greeting. In some languages (Japanese, for instance) there is no equivalent. If you were to ask in Japanese "how are you" it would be taken literally, is if the person who asked really wanted to know. In the United States, the phrase "how are you doing" isn't used sincerely but IS a sincere gesture of friendliness. The phrase "how are you doing" is a part of our culture but essentially, is insincere. Most of the time people want to be around people who are happy, so the appropriate response is good, great or something like that if you are doing well. In any other instances I would just say "fine".

They have in no way notified me through E-mail. In truth, anymore, I can get 5 - 6 BA's in a single day. But whilst I log in they are saying I have earned thirteen elements.? I suppose they're skipping plenty of the ten factor bonuses.

I think its just a courtesy to ask 'how are you doing?' it's a way of acknowledging someone and showing concern for their health. It is only polite to respond, even if you just say 'fine, thank you'.
It doesn't have to be something personal and you don't even have to answer honestly if it bothers you, but you should always repay kindness with kindness.

Hello, and a smile is plenty. I loathe it when I walk into a store or anywhere, and get the horribly insincere, 'Hi! how are you, blah blah blah'..I want to yell at them 'my dog died, my truck got stolen and my teeth fell out, how the f**k do you think I am!' But 'hello' and a smile always wins.

The proper way to salute people we don't know is "how do you do?" and the answer should be "how do you do". So if they ask you say, "fine thank you". If we all practiced courtesy, the world would be a lot different.

just say "good, how 'bout you?" depends on whether or not you want to get roped into a conversation at that particular time. if no, then say not good. if yes then say the above phrase. be real "cool" about your response. since you're a chick, just smile and keep walking.

It is just friendly small talk. In fact it is nice to hear this still happens these days.

It is similar to a nice day. Don't be annoyed just give a fine thanks and be on your way.
