Original sin is the sin by which the first human beings disobeyed the commandment of God, choosing to follow their own will rather than God's will.
As a consequence they lost the grace of original holiness, and became subject to the law of death; sin became universally present in the world.
Besides the personal sin of Adam and Eve, original sin describes the fallen state of human nature which affects every person born into the world, and from which Christ, the "new Adam," came to redeem us.
With love in Christ.

Adam and Eve possessed Sanctifying Grace while they put the will of God ahead of their own. But, when they succumbed to temptation and eat from the tree of "Knowledge of Good and Evil", they did so against the will of God and lost their Sanctifying Grace.
How can later generations inherit anything that was lost by previous generations? That is why we are deprived of God's Sanctifying Grace upon birth. We couldn't inherit because a previous generation lost it. Therfore, it must be earned, and then it must be held onto.
Faith alone does not save. Faith and works, alone, will not save either. Both faith and Faith & works would be powerless to save if not for God and His Sanctifying Grace.
Without Sanctifying Grace, there is no everlasting life.

Why do you think that Catholics believe that?
I'm telling you, I wish I had a dime for every time I've had to set someone straight regarding a misconception about Catholic belief. I'd be a very rich person by now.
Catholics do believe that original sin cost the human race salvation. We also believe that Christ's sacrifice on the Cross restored it -- at least for those who believe in Him.

Catholics believe that both of these were lost in the Garden of Eden. The Catholic concept of this fall is explained in the Catechism:
"Scripture portrays the tragic consequences of this first disobedience. Adam and Eve immediately lose the grace of original holiness ... Finally, the consequence explicitly foretold for this disobedience will come true: man will 'return to the ground,' for out of it he was taken. Death makes its entrance into human history" (399-400).
Best of luck --

It's that whole cumulative effect. We started off in sin we're gonna end up in sin. This is why I find a lot of Catholics depressing.

I am a Catholic, and as such I would have to say, you've already answered your own question. Read your question again. I pray for protestants, especially those who know nothing of the catechism, yet attack us anyway.
