Your choice of pet would depend a lot on the size of your home.
If you have a small home with limited yard space you might consider a Beagle, they are very easy going and allow the ear pulling, dragging and being carried by their back legs very well. All these things are what your baby will be doing, even if you watch the baby 24/7 they will manage to crawl on, drag, bite and be a general terror to you pet. The Beagle has a very high tolerance to kids.
If you have a large yard a Labrador or Retriever would be great. They have the same loving nature and are very tolorant to all the wonderful things young children will do to them.
Either of the dogs mentioned would be good to have with children because they are so mild tempered and allow almost anything to be done to them without wanting to snap, nip or bite.

It depends on what you want.

Big breeds: golden retriever, they are patient, protective and great with small children. Yellow or black labs are also a good choice.

Small breeds: Boston terriers, french bull dogs and poodles are among the best.

Keep in mind that a puppy is just like having a baby. They need attention care and nutrition. It might be a good idea to wait until your baby can help with some of the responsability.

But go to sites like dogbreeds.com or puppyfinder.com. They have complete lists of all breeds and profiles of them. it will tell you how big they get, and temperament among other things. '

if you do get a puppy, good luck

Be sure not to get any type of hound, they sometimes have a instinct to go after young children. A large dog might be best, though that seems to go against what one would think. But they are sturdy and calmer, and can deal with tail-pulling, hair yanking, etc. better. Large dogs can even help protect children. Also, you might want to try an older one, like a 10 year old lab or a senior golden retriever. Good luck!

Actually the Labradore Retreaver is normally known for being a great house pet. That or a Golden Retiever. Either or, they are both really good dogs for little kids. Especially if you get the dog at a younger age then the kid and the Dog can grow up together.

I live on the lake And she watches them like a hawk.. Now when my oldest son was born I had a Rottie.. And she was the greatest with him you would have thought she was the mother and not me.. If he even looked like he might cry she would come find me and paw at me to come see.. She was a yr old when i Brought my son home... Goldens are great if u want a big dog. With a baby will you have time to play with it, or leave it fenced or worse, tied to a tree all day? I am a firm believer in the American Cocker Spaniel as the PERFECT family dog. I have 4 & they are the smartest, cutest, sweetest dogs I've ever had & I've had just about everything!

Frankly - NONE! You have a 4 mos old baby, you have enough to worry about. If you get apuppy, and puppy has to potty and baby needs attention, baby will win, puppy will potty on the floor. How long till you get tired of that? Puppies play bite, chew on baby toys and things, etc. Wait till your baby is potty trained and then think about a puppy.

I too have a new born, and we have a chocolate lab..pure breed. He is great with the baby. He barks when the baby is crying, and loves to lick the baby's feet. He also stands guard in front of the baby's carriage when we go out for walks.

Shih Tzu's are wonderful! They are small, don't shed, and can live to be 20 or older. I have one I adopted at an older age and he just thinks I'm the only thing in the world... He's totally loyal, and they are wonderful and patient with kids. They are very sweet dogs.
