First nations is the term used to define peoples that are descendants of those who where living in modern day countries before European settlers arrived. Sometimes called indigenous people (though it has a different meaning).
Metis is a french term used in Canadian law to define people of mixed ethnic origin including ancestors of first nations origin.

it is important to realize that First Nations is a Canadian term for the American version of Native Americans.

To answer you question of color that is hard to do so politically and correctly. Not all of the Tribes predating European colony of the New World were brown, and as a result not all of their decendants are brown. That is a stereotypical statement and is not tolerated by any means of decency and civility.
