You have to have a first birthday party. It's doesn't have to anything big. They got to have that smash cake. That's the best part of it. This is the time when she starts to really enjoy new things. Most bakeries give you the smash cake free when you order a regular cake (it's just a little bit of the batter from the regular cake). It can just be immediate family. Order some pizzas or go to a deli and buy some meats and cheeses and rolls, make a couple of easy side salads, set it up buffet style and there you go. simple and cheap. Decorations can be a couple of pink balloons and some pink plates and flatware. Save the character parties for when she's older. Plan it with your sister in law.

My daughter had all 4 grandparents present for her first birthday (one set drove 8 hours to be there). My daughter and I wore matching tye-dyed shirts and she had an icecream cake and lots of gifts. We took tons of pictures and she periodically looks at them and enjoys being able to do so. She is now 15. Her first actual party with other kids wasn't until she was 4.

I would wait I think that two is a better age to remember, but if it is that troublesome for you then talk to your brothers wife and set something up to throw a party.

it is crucial for her to have a party!!! she will look back on that and say "wow, my parents love me." if there isn't a party, she'll think "wow, my parents were too selfish to throw a party for me."

It is her very first birthday.
I say have a party, and yes, take a lot of pictures.
Why not have a party, just for fun, or simply to please his wife?
