Give her a cool bath in Aveeno, or generic of same, Oatmeal bath. Rinse well under cool water. then give her Chamomile tea, to help her nerve endings calm down.
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for him. dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before he needs to relax. It will keep him happy, but reduce stress.
If your grocer doesn't carry chamomlile, you can use 'Sleepytime Tea' as it is the same, but with added herbs. Plain chamomile tastes better to a dog.

I'm so sorry. I hope she feels better soon. For immediate relief, you might try taking her to your vet for a cortisone or corticosteroid injection. I have a miniature schnauzer with allergies to corn, wheat, fleas, etc. She had to have injections when the itching was very severe.

We did give her Children's Benadryl Liquid, which did help her feel somewhat better. The others who have suggested it are correct that your vet will need to tell you the correct dosage. My vet was able to tell me over the phone since I knew my dog's weight within 1/2 pound.

It is best to always use products made specifically for dogs, unless your vet recommends something different. Many companies are making some wonderful products for relieving itchiness that are safe for dogs. I'll try to list a variety in the hope that you'll be able to find at least one at a store near you.

Tomlyn Allercaine with Bittran II Antiseptic Anti-Itch Spray - This contains lidocaine to relieve both pain and itching, has an antiseptic to help prevent infection, and a bitter taste to help keep your dog from biting and licking any further. In my experience, however, no taste is bad enough to keep an itchy dog from scratching. It is available at Petco.

DermCare Anti-Itch Spray - This also contains lidocaine to relieve pain and itching. Available at Petsmart.

DVM Pharmaceuticals Pet Relief Spray - We love this one. This one contains Pramoxine HCI, colloidal oatmeal and omega 6 fatty acids to relieve itching, flaking, and dryness. Available at Petsmart.

Corti-Care 0.5% Hydrocortisone Lotion, 4 fl. Oz - Contains a blend of aloe vera gel and 0.5% Hydrocortisone. Hydrocortisone shampoos are also available and may be used in conjunction with lotion. Available at Petsmart.

After taking care of her immediate needs, there are some things you can do for her to reduce the discomfort she experiences if she has another flare up.

Make sure you have her on a monthly heartworm preventative or the longer duration injections if your state allows that. That will ensure that mosquito bites don't lead to a life and death situation.
If you don't have cats, consider using one of the topical flea and tick products that also kills and repels mosquitos. K9 Advantix is the only one I can think of at the moment, but I'm sure your vet knows more. It kills fleas and their larvae, ticks and mosquitos, and has the advantage of being waterproof.
Also try Derm Care Fatty Acid Capsules (available at Petsmart) or Derm Caps For Small & Medium Breeds (available at 1800PetMeds.com) dietary supplements. My miniature schnauzer had horribly dry, flaky skin before we started using Derm Care supplements. Within two weeks, her skin felt heathy, her coat softer and flake free.

Dogs that don't have any fleas or ticks and are still itching can be like that for many different reasons. It may be other bugs like you say, but it could also be allergies, mange, a skin infection, etc. The best thing to do is take it to the vet and they will determine which of these causes it is and the best way to treat it.

Some of the flea & tick topicals also repel mosquitoes. Check your box, I know that Bio Spot does. The itching could be from allergies or hot spots. Here's a website that tells you the dosage to give Benadryl untill you can get to the bottom of why.

Vaccinations can be the problem also. Read the Wisconsin University web links.

my dog had the same problem with bug bites!
we just got him to the vet yesterday and she recommended a few things:
1-use non irritating shampoos--i found some colloidal oatmeal soothing stuff at petsmart.
2-based on my dog's size she said we could use some benadryl...ask your vet what dosage based on your dog's size.
3-dermcaps-they are pills for his food to help moisturize his skin. she said fish oil from GNC put into his food once a day would help too!
4-she prescribed some antibiotics for him b/c he was getting some sores and she didn't want them to get infected.

so, most of what i recommended was OTC, but i'd still get doggie to the vet's to be sure there isn't something else happening...like allergies (which can develop anytime).

take care!!!

Joey322 had a good suggestion and one I've used myself. Benedryl is safe for your dog BUT you do need to ask your vet about how much to use. Avon's Skin So Soft is known for it's bug repellant qualities! I've used this on my dogs before and it does help some. Take that poor itchy baby to the vet, though! Bless her heart. Hope she finds some relief soon.

Apply small amounts of lavander cream or lotion. it's completely natural and soothing on anything from ant bites to mosquito bites to wasp bites. just make sure it's completely natural, like from a nature store or swiss just company.
soaking him in oatmeal could also help, it just depends on his tolerance to water. Also make sure it's not something he having an allergic reaction to, see what your vet thinks.

Get some topical anti itch cream from the grocery store. It wont harm her as long as she doesn't eat it. You can also go to the pet store where they have an anti itch spray you can use.
