I'm French so I should know. He should see that as a great opportunity. Don't try to learn French. The more he'll be immersed in a completely English-speaking environment, the better for him. Actually, he is really lucky as most people who are sent to a foreign country will end up with people who speak their own language, which is a bit pointless as far as language is concerned.

I shouldn't worry about it. For sure, he's across to practice his English.

Have a dictionary handy (one that does both French- English & English-French) so when everyone gets stuck for the word and the signs don't work...

Don't worry, french students learn English at school ( well, I think so!). And it'll be a great opportunity for him to improve his English!
But I think you should learn some common words like
thank you= Merci
bonjour= good morning
....
It'll make a good impression and he'll feel more at ease if he see that you make some efforts to talk to him!

Good luck!

If you get really stuck you can use this website to translate

Don't worry too much though, he's here to learn English and as a host family the best thing you can do is try to communicate with him in the language that he is trying to learn. If the language barrier is causing any major problems it would be best to speak to someone from his language school or if you are using one, the agency that is paying you to be a host family.

Point to things. bonjour is hello, je ne parle pas francais is I don't speak french, bon nuit is good night, m'aidez is help me, porquoi is why, pardon is what, lentement sil vous plait is slowly please.

That should do ya, he'll know English anyway, because they're taught it at school.
