I am constantly battling with an answer to this question. Many things are required, but I think that a total honesty and openness would allow for a great relationship. I don't mean spilling every thought and opinion (believe me, I know about letting out something that shouldn't have been said), but simply being who you say you are. Practice what you preach and don't be ashamed of your beliefs. How can a relationship be based on lies? It can't. You have to know a person to have a relationship with them.

One of the areas I'm still working on is remembering that God loves people, even those people who really get on my nerves, and that He calls me to show his love to others. Another thing that I'm working on is remembering that He is in charge and that I don't have to worry about how something is going to turn out if it doesn't go the way that I think would be best. Then I don't fall into the trap of getting angry and trying to have "My will" be done instead of His.
If you really want to learn about Godly character and how to apply his Word to your life you should take the time to listen to my Pastor. He's a great teacher with a nationwide radio ministry and you can hear him on your computer @ http://www.oneplace.com/ministries/Enduring_Truth/Archives.asp

The most life changing thing that God has revealed to me regarding Godly character is the most simple statement, yet a hard one to follow.Be like Christ in every area of your life.Paul said that his followers should imitate him as he imitated Christ. We should be Christ-like in ALL areas of our lives!
We lay our sins and stubborn wills at the foot of the Cross, just to pick them up again. We must live as if we have been forgiven, because we have!

What I have found to be the most valuable is following the three steps to discipleship as Jesus outlined in Luke 9:23. The three steps are deny yourself, take up his cross daily, and follow him. Reading the bible and studying it has strenthened my faith and helped me grow stronger as I follow Jesus.

Jesus has shown me that His love is my motivation in everything I do. I will want to do the good things that encourage, help or anything that is selfless to people. His love wont judge, bring harm, cheat, lie, or anything that hurts people. His love can do no wrong, so therefore that is what I have learned and want to abide by.

That there is no such thing in man. All that is in us by nature is carnal, fleshly and sinful. To this, Christ Himself even testified when someone tried to compliment Him by saying, ‘good master’. Immediately Messiah corrected him and said there is none good, but God. So it is in us. The only Good or Godly character we have IS Christ in us. To try and develop some ‘good or godly’ character outside of Christ being in us and manifesting Himself through us is not only pretense, but a slap at the very death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Paul stated the Christian way very succulently when he said: 'it is no longer I, but Christ in me, who lives, and the life I now life I life by faith in the Son of God'. Too much of Christianity is spent trying to overcome the flesh by fleshly means. ‘I’ must control my temper, be nice, act happy, put on a happy face, be meek, be sensitive, act interested, pray harder, give more, love people, submit to my husband, be humble, go to church, not lust, look good, witness more, study harder, learn Greek, be kind to puppies, smile, overcome this that or the other. While all these things may seem Christian, your attempting to do any of them puts you back under the law of works and not under grace. If all it takes to be a good Christian with ‘godly character’ is a kind disposition, nice words and good works I’m afraid that many Buddhists, Hindus and even Muslims out Christian many of us who profess Christ. It is Christ IN you that works out all these things, in His way, manner, time and life. It is His life IN us -AS us, instead of us- that is the Christian life. We all too often block that life outflow by our incessant trying to do what we cannot do or are even asked to do. We are simply told to pick up the cross and follow Him to death of self and the birth of His life into us and allowing Him to do everything. For everything that we do, we screw up and everything that He does, is good, eternal and profitable for us and Him.

The greatest lesson I have is that only Jesus develops godly character in us. I am nothing Jesus is everything.
