Only you can answer that question but if it is suffering then it may be time...However only you can make that decision and it is not an easy one to make.....Try to think of the animal before yourself and decide whether or not it is in pain and that will be your answer

Take a look at your pet and make sure there are no abnormalties. If your lab acts sick or ill then it may be time if he or she is 12 years old the dog has had a good long life. It is a very hard decision to make but if you believe it is time then it wont be so hard to let go. If your pet is in pain and their is nothing that can be done to help the pain, and your pet is not going to get better it is humane to let it go as soon as you think it is time. Keeping a pet in pain is not fair.

Just because they move around slow doesn't mean they are ready to be put to sleep. You haven't given too much detail. Your lab could have arthritis and that's why they are moving around slow. My dog is almost 18 years old. She moves slow to but she still eats and is very active. If you are really close to your dog, you can tell. Your dog will let you know when he or she is ready to go. That is if YOU are ready to let them go. But your vet can help you decide to if it's time too if you think they are suffering but aren't sure.

My lab did not die until 17, but my parents lab is 9 and always sleeps, has arthritis, some eye problem and the list goes on. But they never take her the vet or give her vitamins and they never walk her either. It all depends. Labs are known for there lazy disposition so 12 isn't really that old. Ask your vet! BTW, are they the greatest dogs ever!

You can usually tell when your pet is in pain. If it is pain you should put it down. Also if you have children if it turns on them you should put it down. Nobody can tell you when to put your animal down you have lived with the animal and you know it. Take your dog to the vet it may just be old age if it is something more serious your vet can advise you of options. No matter what it is you decision and it will not be easy but remember you are doing what is best for your dog.

I think this is a decision that should be made by you, with input from the vet. Our Golden Retriever, Murphy, started moving slow at age 9, but a daily dose of rymadel, an athritis med, made a HUGE difference.! He lived comfortably and happily until a week before his 13th b-day, when we had to put him down because he had cancer and was suffering.

Best of luck to you. I know this can be such a difficult decision to make.

Just because he is moving around slow is not a reason to put him down. If he isn't in pain let him live, if he is in constant pain then sometimes it is best to put them to sleep. Big dogs have a tendancy to get hip displasia, and that is a reason to let them go, but he is getting old, 12 years is in people years , he is getting really old, so of course he is slowing down .

This is never an easy decision. Pleas consult your vet. Labs suffer from a lot of hip illness. As long as the dog is not suffering then I would not consider it. If the dog is, then consult the vet to see what can be done before you make any decisions.

He's bound to move a little slower, my cat died at the age of 19 and he was slow moving and when I questioned the vet about it - he said arthritis. If he's eating good, he's probably ok, just getting old. But to be on the safe side take him for a routine check up!!

When your dog has no more life left in them than its time to put them to sleep... Like Not eating,Drinking, Going out to use to bathroom Or no longer wanting to play with you. Sleeping all day. Or they are Blind, Deaf With all the other's.. We had a neighbor who just put thier Shih-tzu mix to sleep that was 18 yrs old. She could no longer control herself in the house. She was Blind,Deaf and had to wear diaper's. She was still eating,Drinking but all she did was bark all day long because unhappy.. So it's you that know's best about your dog or animal as to when to put them to sleep..

Best of luck :)
