if it is a boy they are "catting around like the little handsome kitty men that they are"
if it is a girl probably meeting some male kitty or hanging out with her friends and being mischievous little kitties
but I don't let my cats outside, no way, I love them too much

Cats use the night time to hunt and find a mate. So if your cat is not fixed, I would get it done fast. My cat used to go away from the house for a week at a time and then come home for a few days. We ended up never seeing him again. We think a fox or Coyote got him. So if you are in an area that has fox and coyotes I would make sure your cat is inside at night.

My cat walks around my fenced yard, escapes, checks out the neighbors' yards and at some point catches a mouse. (He brings home a mouse every night and leaves it on the patio.) Sometimes, for fun, he jumps on the railing of the deck and then jumps on the roof of the house and walks around. About 4 a.m. he wants to come in and cuddle with the dogs until breakfast.

Cat's are predators and territorial so they have a area they are in control of. (or think they do) They hunt and check on the area. If not fixed ... mate. They also have a levels in the community
Unfixed Male (Tom) high on chain, female unfixed (breeding Queen) fixed cats usually have lower status in community.
Cats chose to be with humans.... they are very capable of fending for them selves.

Cats like to roam. They may go out humting for mice, rats, etc. They may go out looking for other cats, to fight with, or mate with. They may just wander the neighborhood to see what is going on.

Just because it is a domesticated animal doesn't mean it doesn't still have tendancies like a wild animal...your cat is out there hunting for small animals, protecting it's territory and generally just being a "wild" cat....

They all gather in the local park for concerts! Just kidding. They patrol the neighborhood looking for rats, mice, and a nice garden to fertilize.
