Although lighter (pastel) colors do tend to enlarge a room visually, there are many decorating tricks that will also serve the same purpose and still allow you to introduce color into your space. Many times we tend to clutter small spaces with a lot of small pieces of furniture and decorative items to compensate for the size of the home which worsens the scenrario.

If you keep one color pallette in use thru out the house so the eye flows easily from one room to another, this in itself will make your home look larger. Instead of a small sofa and many chairs and table, look for as large as the room will accomodate and build on that. Substitute chairs for overstuffed floor pillows which can be tossed in the corner when not used or add extra seating around the coffee table for guests. Think dual pupose. A sturdy wicker or bamboo hamper covered with a folded decorative throw or pillow will add additional seating when necessary and storage inside. A trunk for a coffee table. I have seen this guys...don't try to fit a large screen tv into a small room! There are also corner armoire units out there that will also give more space in the room, provide space for cd and dvd storage, books, etc.

Same holds true in the dining and bedroom areas. Purchase only furniture that is essential for use and the rooms will seem larger. A smaller dining table with a light fixture handing above it sitting on an area rug will draw the eye to the center of the room. The use of large mirrors and reflective materials in decorative items, glass, brass, chrome, etc will help. Resist the urge to "overdress" table and dresser tops.

I realize you asked for help in choosing paint colors which is next to impossible without first knowing the colors of things that will fill the rooms. These are all just general suggestions for ways to make your rooms look and feel larger so you can still use colors you love to create a warm livable home without feeling claustraphobic! Good luck to you!!

Lighter and neutral are usually better. But if you want to use darker colors you can make a room appear bigger by putting a mirror in the room. It will give the feel of being bigger than it is.
