I am working with a real estate agent but I wanted to get some other opinons. The areas that I have been looking at are: Grantie Bay, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova and Natoma. I have two school aged children ( straight A's)so good schools are my first priority.

I have lived in this area for the past 12 years. I can only give you my personal opinion, coming from an upper middle class family myself. First of all, as another poster suggested, Roseville IS a good area. It is close enough to Sacramento for you to commute, and is near the Galleria Mall and several local churches. Also, there are good schools in Roseville. The area is definitely suburban, but it is still small enough to be friendly and offer a lot of modern conveniences. The school system in Roseville is good, too. I would highly recommend you look in Roseville. I'm not sure how much you're planning to spend, but if you can afford homes around $500,000 then that's where you should begin looking.

Granite Bay is another good area, and has the same high points I've mentioned for Roseville. Again, their schools are very good. Also close to excellent hospitals and to Folsom Lake, which is a hot spot for kids and parents to go in the summer.

I do not recommend Rancho Cordova. It is way "too" suburban and has a higher crime rate. Also, the traffic is a much bigger problem out that way. Personally, I don't find it a very convenient location if I am traveling to Sacramento. I avoid that area myself. I also don't recommend Citrus Heights, because it is just not where I would want to raise children. It is more dangerous, in my opinion. I'm not so sure about Elk Grove, either.

I can't give you much information about Natomas, except that it is considered to be more out in the boonies. So far, your best choices really are Granite Bay or Roseville.

There is another location I can recommend you look at. It is my personal favorite, but it is not as suburban as you may be looking for, as suburban as you will find Roseville and Granite Bay to be. Loomis is a small town east of Sacramento, past Roseville and rather close to Granite Bay. There is an excellent, excellent high school here called Del Oro High School. The teachers are wonderful and will challenge your children and expect much from them. The campus has a football field, a huge track through wooded areas for p.e., a soccer field, and another sports field. It is great for kids that are active and are interested in sports. Loomis is more of a rural area and is extremely safe. It is the type of place where you won't be afraid to leave your doors unlocked. Most people living in Loomis have acreage, but they have built new subdivisions here that are also very nice. It has easy freeway access. You could commute to Sacramento from here, although it is a bit more of a drive than it would be if you picked a house in Roseville. If I were raising children, I would definitely move here. That being said, Roseville and Granite Bay are also great choices and might be more in tune with what you're looking for if you want suburbia.

Rocklin is another city that has rapidly grown in the past several years. It's further west than Loomis, so it's closer to Roseville and Sacramento. You have easy access to I-80, and it is also a great place to raise kids. There are a lot of families in Rocklin. It's a good location because it is central to just about everything.

In summary, I highly recommend Roseville, Granite Bay, or Rocklin if you're looking for great suburban neighborhoods. If you think you could be okay with something more rural, check out Loomis for their safety, security, and schools. All of these places have low crime rates and good solid schools, are close to modern conveniences, and would be somewhere I would want to raise my own children. I can't give them any higher recommendation than that. They're also close to freeway access.

Best of luck to you and your family. Hope this helps.

The best school is Oak Chan in Folsom, you have to live in Lexington Hills, but it is the best. Rancho is not a good area, and Elk Grove is having a lot of crime problems (drive bys, street racing, and more)

I live just east of Folsom, and I love it, lived here for 5 years and have never had any problems. My boyfriends mom is a teacher here so I kinda know a little bit about the schools.

Don't know myself, but I do have a friend that lives out there that might be able to give you an idea of what to avoid or what to aim for. her ID is Rdhairvixen. I think she lives in the Elk Grove area somewhere.
