In certain places it is not illegal to have crows. I have had several, yet I am also experienced with birds beyong the average pet lover.

I would not recommend a crow unless you want to share the house with a creature with the intelligence of a five year old, the energy of a three-year old and the attitude of a two-year old who is going through the Terrible Twos. They are highly intelligent and you can't just keep them in a cage. If they get bored they can get destructive. They will get into anything and everything.

Yes, they can talk (DO NOT SPLIT THE TONGUE!!!!!) and they can naturally count (at least to five), discern colors, shapes, and patterns like any child.

I would highly research this endeavor. They can live to be fifteen to twenty years. I know that pied crows are readily available for about $600.

Personally, I'd recommend something a little more laid back, especially for a first -time bird owner. Cockatiels are my favorite, and if you don't mind loud noises, conures are excellent as well, and have the same intelligence and capacity for play without the recalcitrence.

You would have to obtain a Wildlife Rehabilitation License. These kinds of animals aren't legal without one, and these licenses aren't too easy to obtain. You would have to prove experience and capability with wild animals, you also need to have property not in a residential area. Then you get involved with other license holders and see if anyone has a crow that they will let you adopt. Its not like you can go grab one out of the wild. You need to do alot of research and be prepared to make a large commitment.

I heard that you can have a crow as a pet and that they can learn to say words, like a parrot, but I think you are not going to find one at a pet store. good luck!

Crows are wild animals. They aren't pets. They are scavangers. They have to find dead animals to eat. They don't do well in captivity. It might even be ileagal to keep one without a permit. Permits are given to places that can nurse injured birds back to health and release them back into the wild. Not to someone who plans to keep it as a pet.
