I am a very serious High School Athlete and watch everything that is put into my body. I try to stay away from Coke and other Carbonated Beverages throughout my seasons, but ocasinaly durign Dead Week or what not, I like to have one just for fun. But I've noticed that Coke and other carbonated beverages make my legs cramp up so bad I can't walk. Frozen Cokes (Icee/Slushi) dont have the same effect on me. So I think it must be the carbonation. Does anyone have any idea why I'm doing this??

It's the caffine, not only i it a diuretic which causes you to dehydrate a bit but it causes the body to produce Adrenaline and that can cause your muscles to tense up. Leg cramps are usually caused by dehydration and drinking a soda does not hydrate you.

Some good constructive advice here as well. I agree, I think its the combination of ingredients in the soda that is either depleting or dehydrating your system. Replace those cans of pop, with either some crystal light (water-based) or even a diet or low-cal fruitpunch. They now have some really good low-cal drinks you can substitute.

One interesting fact, you can effectively clean a corroded car battery with a can of coke.

Too much sodium! Stop drinking all soda (even diet or frozen), they are all very, very bad for you! Drink water...it may be hard at first, but after a while, the thought of soda will make you ill. There are plenty of flavored waters on the market, just make sure to read the nutritional labels and choose one with the least amount of sodium or additives!

A study from the Netherlands shows that sugar in sports drinks slows absorption and increases stomach cramping in running races shorter than 12 miles. (International Journal of Sports Medicine, Volume 26, 2005). Fluids pass through your stomach and are absorbed almost immediately in your intestines. Exercise slows fluid passage from the stomach but does not affect intestinal absorption. Sugar added to drinks can delay stomach emptying to increase risk for cramps.

it's probably the caffiene or your body just isn't used to the carbonation whenever you do drink it. just stop drinking them lol.
