No, misunderstanding there. This is what I would call a little red flag. Don't ignore them. If you feel like something is going on behind your back then it probably is.
Unless he was planning a big surprise for your birthday I can't think of any reason for him to act the way he did. And even if it was some sort of surprise for you there would be no reason for him not to answer his phone or call you back.
In the words of Tina Turner I would crank it up with YOU BETTER BE GOOD TO ME!!!!!!!!!!

sounds like this guy is a VERY sloppy lier. Either way it is over-whelmingly obvious that he is being secretive. I am not sure about you, but I don't like secrets. In theory, keeping a secret from someone you love or care for is a deceptive form of passive lying and deceit. If he can't tell you who he's talking to and why you can't hear it, then he can't be with you. You could of coarse make an effort to interceot the phone bill, and you can find out who he was talking to that way. This could prevent you from making a fool of your self, or will give you a concrete leg to stand on.

Why was you there waiting and why did he have a place to come home to? Never. Mine knows he better answer my call and he better always come home. If he doesnt then when he does get home, his stuff is on the front lawn or the house is empty when he comes in. Come on dont let him do this to you. A guy can only do what you allow him to do. Take care of it now or he will continue. Sorry, hope things work out for the best.

If he was actually handling an important situation, he should have immediately contacted you and let you know what was going on. Last night my aunt had a wreck, (she was not injured), but she called everywhere trying to let people know where she was. The point is, he should have informed you of the task at hand. If he didn't have time to call you he should have had someone contact you to let you know that the situation had been handled and that he was alright.

You can never be sure. Ask him and watch his reaction. Don't be aggressive be concerned. Tell him that bothered you. You can't always be sure, but I always say follow your instinct.

I think something is really going on. Maybe he's cheating and maybe he's not.

You should confront him about it. Don't just to conclusions but it does sound like he is hiding something.
Just talk to him!

He's either cheating or he's doing something illegal. Either way, dump him.
