I think we can all come up with different excuses, but I'm sure nobody has THE answer you're looking for. I believe we are all on this earth for a purpose. I know many disabled people and I have to say that I learn so much from them every day. The simple ways they live their lives and the happiness they show me all the time makes me wish I had their mindset in some ways. Physically disabled people don't just lay down and call it quits. They strive to become better with what they have to work with and they amaze me with what they can accomplish! Why? Maybe its the environment, maybe it's genetics, or maybe God just wants to show us through their lives that even imperfect people can succeed and make a difference and he loves us all the same. You decide:)

I was born deaf due to a mutation that caused my cochlear to be larger than normal. That mutation seems to run in the family.

I don't believe I was "put here by 'god'" to help people learn compassion and kindess towards disabled people. (Yes, I have been told that repeatedly, as tiring as that is) However, I did notice I do teach people to learn to live side-by-side with those who are disabled without being nervous and shy about it. I have noticed I do teach people compassion whereever I go. I think that is just a good act of humanity, not "god".

Cuz it is MY choice to act this way. I could be an bung hole about it. I could be mean-spirited. But no. _I_ chose to be kind and friendly, cuz I think whereever I go, I am an "ambassador" for deafness (not deaf people, no, but Deafness).

Last thing I want to do is to jump down some poor hearie's throat just for asking a innocent question about deafness, then hearie may be too shy to approach another deaf person. :-< Then I would have done a disservice both to deaf and hearing people.

Obtw, I am a spiritual atheist. :-)

No...it's not so you can feel better about yourself.
People with disabilities are on the planet because they are people.....with disabilities.
Now go out and feed the poor or help a disabled man across the street.

I don't think it's about you at all. I have a disability...it's more my own challenge and my own learning experience. But if you find that disabled people have some impact on you, then figure out what that is supposed to mean and learn from it.

The physical reasons, of course, gene mutations, pollutants, etc, but it seems you're more into the moral aspects of why they are here. The old "If God were an all-loving, omniscient God, how could He allow this?" Am I on the right track, here?

The reason for this is, it's a test of our humaneness. Seeing how we as a society takes to the task of caring for those in need, and when society doesn't do it, how we as individuals respond. Of seeing if we take our responsibilities as stewards of this planet as seriously as we should.

Same reason there are disabled animals- disease and injury. Many early peoples let their new borns with birth defects dies instead of caring for them. They did the same with their elders. I don't think it was because they were evil or heartless, it was just the best thing for a group whose resources were limited and need people who contribuited more than they took.

It is because we live in a fallen world. The world was perfect, but we continue to corrupt the land and people pay for the consequence of free will. As long as people continue to defy God, their motives and actions will weigh on the shoulders of the world.

In a nutshell, humanity is sinful and fallen. Also, disability builds character. If we have nothing to overcome, we have no way to grow.
