Do they plan to mothball her or scrap her, does anyone know?

Unfortunately, the future of the USS KittyHawk probably will be a ship breaker. That was the same fate as the USS United States of America (USS America CVN). Although these ships have a great deal of history and heritage behind them, we can't afford to keep them up. Incidentally all of the ships that are currently in 'mothball', or floating museums (i.e.-USS North Carolina BB, USS Alabama BB, etc.) could be refitted in six months to a year if they were ever needed.

Because of technological advancements in naval aviation, I doubt an aircraft carrier could be refitted in a timely/cost efficient manner.

most will stay in moth balls for up to 20 years, just in case they are needed in the future. If that happens they can be re-outfitted and up dated in pretty quick order
